With the local stuff closing how about a Palm Canyon Epic ride? I’ve been wanting to do this for a while but never made it out there.

Any thoughts/ recommendations?

On the plus side, this is the perfect time of year to do such a ride. A couple of weeks ago I was thinking of doing the same ride.

However, I would personally not consider that ride at this time for the following reasons:
- The city of Palm Springs I believe has essentially shut down due to Coronavirus
- Other similar small towns (e.g. Big Bear, Idyllwild) are actively telling visitors to stay away
- Any non-essential trips which would involve stops at gas stations, bathrooms, etc. goes against our collective social distancing efforts. I suppose you could get around this if you can drive there and back w/o stopping anywhere.
- As our city parks/trails get shut down, more and more people will be heading out to places such as Palm Springs or Laguna to ride/hike. This can lead to the type of overcrowding we're trying to avoid, and perhaps the shutdown of those areas too
- If you get hurt and need medical help, you'll be taking up the resources of a severely stressed healthcare industry. Plus, a hospital is probably the last place you want to be right now.

If you go, I hope you only go with people you're already living with, bail if the trailhead looks crowded, plan to drive there and back without stopping, and ride carefully.

Sorry to be a downer, and obviously, you are free to ignore me completely. You did, however, ask for thoughts.

Cheers,
Chicken Little

BTW, if you want to see something really scary, click on the below link which takes you to a COVID-19 "scoreboard" courtesy of Johns Hopkins which shows the number of confirmed cases in each country.

Then click on the US to see how our number of cases looks basically like a vertical line.

Then keep in mind that our testing is horribly behind, and the actual number of cases could be 10-25x higher.

Yikes.

Welcome to DT SailandBike

I just cancelled my trip to AZ for the reasons listed above. Never liked being "that guy' for anything

The trail might have snow up there still/now and that would push you to work even harder.
I rode up around there a couple of week ago and there was NOBODY around. Keep that in mind since there isn't even cell coverage in places where you might just need it.

When this blows over, you'll find plenty of people to go with you to support each other.

Take care and let's all get through this quickly

There is a fire station on top of the hill you can call and see their feelings on you riding out there. Italo stop there and let them know that a group were going to do the ride. The weather will be too hot for me next week in the 80s at the bottom. Thank you for sharing and posting a ride.

And we just surpassed China for most confirmed cases. Not winning...

I would wait to ride.

Also, I don't believe any reports from China.

China was either not straight forward with their numbers (which many believe) or they really and truly LOCKED down Wuhan (in a way that's not possible here in the US) to prevent the spread. Otherwise, no way could their numbers be so low with 1.4 billion residents.

As far as our numbers, we're at 83000 so far and 1200 deaths. Just a tad short of the 60 million cases and 12000 deaths of the swine flu in 2009.

Too many factors to say how this will shape out compared to swine flu.

Yes, we're at 83K documented, but with a per capita test rate far far below other countries for the time being. It's all about test, test, test, trace. And then test those linked to a trace. Quarantine the confirmed. But with 83K, multiple by a factor of 10x to 20x for a good guess of actual, and still growing exponentially. We were at around 2600 and change last Saturday.

Hopefully, effective treatments will be available fast and the physical distancing we're all suffering through will help us overcome it quicker. But then we should be on high alert for a second wave.

As far as China goes, true that you cannot count on the specificity of their reported numbers, but we do have a good idea that they are reasonably accurate; at least accurate enough to provide decent data.

And yes, they truly did lock them down (and in). Hopefully it will be a cold day in hell before our government literally welds apartment building doors shut, as documented in Wuhan (quite effective apparently though).

Remember - in the middle of a Pandemic, it's ultimately better to be viewed as an alarmist, and wrong, than it is to be viewed as lackadaisical, but pushing daisies.

So yeah - probably best to forego the Palm Canyon Epic for now, for the reasons Inconceivable referenced above.
