I've had more than one park ranger tell me that ground squirrels are among the most dangerous critters out there because of all the diseases they potentially can carry: Rabies, bubonic plague, and the ticks that carry lyme disease. |

It's been a while since I've seen a horned lizard and surprising close to home on the Santee trails. This is the biggest one I've ever seen Attachment: A good sized coach whip spotted in the same general area. He didn't want to pose for pictures. Attachment: Attachment:

Attachment: Made a little friend on the trail today. He froze and pretended we couldn’t see him for a long time. I finally prodded him gently with a stick (a long stick!) and he moved off with the cutest little high-pitched, low-decibel buzzing. Not like the big f*ckers that send a shiver down your spine. |

Attachment: One of these western spotted skunks ran right out in front of me while I was cranking along in boost mode on my legal route back to the car today, on the gravel road past Sage Creek HS — had to slam on the brakes so as not to run it over. Which could have been unpleasant. [stock photo from the Field Museum] |

This little coyote pup was about 15ft from my side van doors trying like hell to get whatever was under that rock to his left. Watched him for a good 10 mins until I went back in to make dinner |
