Don't think that's a King Snake ! Don't know how close you were but if you were close you got lucky.

What he said - he was coiled and ready to bite you if you got too close. Not really a lot you can do once a rattler bites you except try and stay calm and get to hospital ASAP for anti venom. Always carry a cell phone!

'Tis sad indeed when comic genius goes unrecognized in an emoticon-dependent world.

Yeah, it scared the crap out of me. The hiss/rattle really caught me off guard, and he was all coiled when I saw him just a couple feet away. Of course it didn't help that I was climbing and going about 5mph.

That's cool. I bet I've seen that same cat there before. Which means that ain't the only time a human made stoopid, kissy, "here-kitty"-type noises at it.

Okay I wasn't on the bike when I took it, but I did pass 3 guys on bikes climbing back out from the tide pools so still totally counts :)

Came up on this beauty while up riding switchbacks the other day. I heard it before I saw it thankfully. I know lot's of folks appreciate them, but they just give me the creeps.

Saw a weasel run across the trail while we were standing around gabbing post-ride at Calavera today. No time for a photo, so this is from the internet.

Yes, I am one hundred percent sure I did not see a ground squirrel. It was one of these, a long tailed weasel. They are indigenous here but rarely seen. I've only seen a couple before, but since one was dead, I got a good look at it and remember the markings well. I like my rides to have nature moments, but today I'll settle for post-ride.

Was recently an article about them in union tribune, lots of comments saying others have seen them recently too. Wonder if there is some kind of weasely population explosion going on
