In my experience rattlers freeze and get defensive and then I’m left wondering whether to goad them off the trail or chance going around them (safely distanced). Gopher snakes just keep moving, never really noticed whether in retreat or advance.

We encountered a little gopher snake on today's ride. He took a lot of coaxing to leave but when he did, he retreated rather than advanced. As for rattlesnakes, I've seen them go both ways and even had Southern Pacific that charged me after about 2-3 minutes of trying to make him yield the trail. He didn't just strike in my direction, he actually slithered pretty aggressively up the trail at me.

Yesterday I saw a coach whip/red racer (only my second in 11 years of mountain biking) and he did the same thing the other one did - hit the boost and hauled ass in the direction he was already traveling. If you're not familiar with that type of snake, Google some videos to see how freaking fast they are.

^^^ Definitely! Coachwhips are not only fast, they will rear their heads up above tall grass to get a look at you, which is pretty freaky. Saw one do that down south once.

Saw this guy near the coast today. He was trying to make his escape while I fumbled for my phone/camera. I knew he was harmless, but still, I'm no fan of serpents. Grabbed him quick anyway and put him back in the open for a quick pic.

Nice California king snake. If you ever run into a snake or other reptile on the trail and you're saying, "Gee, what is that?", this site is an excellent resource: http://www.californiaherps.com/snakes/snakespics.html

Is a California King snake really just two twin snakes set next to each other?
