Darryl has got me thinking about a 29er. I've been looking at the EMD 9 from Niner.
Would this be a good first 29er. Cost would be a factor as I just finished the SS build a couple months back and the EMD comes in at pretty price point. Also the wifey would kill me. Probably get the moondust since it'll be close to the color of the frame on the SS. :ninja:
I was gonna use the parts from the SS with the exception of the wheels and fork of course. Will probably sell the Magura, to get a Reba, and either relace my King hubs or trade the set (26er) for something in the larger format.
I am 5'10" and weigh in at 215 lbs. Go with a Medium or Large? I have a couple stems to play with as well. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would go with a medium. And I claim no responsibility for this.

Freaking Darryl, don't worry his latest fad is a Road Bike. Now he's going to be a Roadie. So if you want to be up to date, by the 29er & buy some lycra, road bike, & Nair to get all the hair off your legs & arms.

I here Darryl's old Redline Monocog Flight is up For Sale.

I love my 29er, but I'm a little taller than you are. The big wheels make trail obstacles smaller and easier. I'll never go back to 26ers, but that may be my height talkin'.

 Not Darryl's fault though. Lately I've been worse than women and their shoes when it comes to bikes. I'll stay away from the lycra and Nair, Thank You Very Much! Just not my style.

It really depends on what you plan on doing on the 29er and how you want to configure it (i.e. cruising, racing, gears, SS, rigid, suspension, etc.)

Unless you are planning on racing or are really concerned about weight, I would recommend going with a chromo frame for the ride qualities. Aluminum and scandium are light but can make for a harsh ride. Chromo is usually a lot cheaper as well.

As for size, make sure to compare effective top tube lengths as well as seat tube lengths. If you find yourself between sizes, I would suggest going with a smaller frame to compensate for the larger wheels.

Hope this helps a bit.

The EMD is a great choice. As far as cost, I'm pretty sure it's Niner's cheapest frame.

As far as ride quality verses steel--I had a steel Zion frame before the EMD and I can't tell a difference at all. Go for the lighter weight EMD frame and you won't be disappointed.

Most importantly, test ride everything you can and see for yourself

when you are ready I have parts you may want to purchase from my old 29er build...the frame is a small though so that might not work, but I do have a Reba Race...hit me up if you want it. Its in Near New condition, I think maybe 5 rides...3 of which were road rides...

Haven't seen any shops with built up Niners. Pacman, you gotta let me check yours out. :hello: Any recommendations for shops that carry 29ers?

Gonna run it SS with a squishy up front. No racing or anything special. Just as a second choice to go with depending on where I'm riding. Basically just to have fun.
At 499 for the Niner EMD, I don't know if there is a better frame at a cheaper price.

Well if he buys the Fork the only 9er specific thing I have left is the Vassago Bandersnatch...its a 16 with an ETT of 23, in Sliver, again ridden 5 times...really nice frame.

That frame's a wee bit small for me at 6'3" I would suppose, although I have talked to Mike at NOTB about building one up.
