Even though it has had Tubeless rims since I built it, I just went tubeless. Using Bontrager ACX 2.2 tires. Weight is now sitting comfortably at 25.4 lbs. :bang:

To break the tires in, I took it on a 41.9 mile, 4500'+ ride today. :D Rode with James (Quastionis on STR). He put the route together and we knocked it out today. Being that neither one of us had done the route before, he wanted to keep it just the 2 of us. His call, not mine. We started at his house in 4S Ranch, rode to Black Mt, then to LPQ, then to Lopez Canyon, then to SDRP trail system, then North and South Hodges and back to his house in 4S.

Total trail time was a bit over 7 hours. I'm SUPER tired now, but I'll do up a RR soon. Next time--if there is a next time  --we'll open it up to a larger group.

Here's my latest ride. Both my rides are 29ers, but I only have good pictures for this one. I'll post about the other one later...

Ventana El Rey 23" frame (yeah, it's XXL! Looks like a 26er doesn't it?)
Reba SL 29er fork
RP23 rear shock
Groovy Luv Handles handlebars (Gawd I love these bars... on both of my bikes now!)
X9 deraileurs with X0 shifters (setup 2x9 with bashguard)
XT cranks (180mm baby!)
Front Wheel: DT 240S hub with 9mm through Q/R, Bontrager OSB mustang rim, Nevegal (the 9mm through Q/R really tightens up the whippy Reba)
Rear Wheel: CK hub, Stans Flow Rim, Exiwolf
BB7 mechanicals front and rear

Pictures leaning against my Nissan truck are just after Ben at Bike Empire helped me give it a new drivetrain:

Is that a sub-20 pound bike? I can't remember if it was that one or an Italian HT that weighed like 17 elbows...regardless, sweet ride.

Thanks for the props.... I love the bike and my entrance into the realms of modern bicycle technology have been made oh so much better due to her presence.

In regards to the weight I think it's in the 23.5 range. It could be a lot less as it's still in stock (Sheep's clothing.) She'll be set up a bit more proper before race season.

Cheers,

C.K.

Hey KD,
That is sweet...I almost bought one but settled on the superfly. Here is my current 29'r flock.

Superfly
Niner (in work)
Aizan (torn down to build the Niner)
Siren (1/2 29'r and only half built anymore)

You should weigh your Orbea.....it probably is more than 23.5. They usually run a bit heavier. My Stuperfly hit the scale at 22.9 without pedals and cages. That is with light 1.8 tires and a light upgraded flat bar. So in ridable trim it is 23.6. it came out of the box around 24.25

On a different note.....What shifters are you running? Do the shift levers hit the top tube if your bars swing all the way around?

Thanks.... Yeah, I did weigh it.....

I will be racing a Superfly next season. Can't wait till it shows up so I can get it going. I love the Orbea though..... I am a big fan and own a Orca as well.

I have ridden traditional steel hard tails forever (No joke) and am completely amazed how damn fast 29 er's descend. It's crazy.....

Oh yeah, in regards to shifters I have some Grip Shift stuff on there presently. I run a pretty heavy negative rise to get anywhere near what I am used so it is not an issue. That is the only thing that blows about the 29er set up are the steep angles and how tall they are besides that I am a fan. Viva Orbea!

Cheers,

C.K.

So it really did weigh 23.5? Most others I have seen weighed more than that...But if you have changed the groupo with grip shit..then you have lightened it up a bit. I thought yours was stock and they came with I think X-9 stuff.

Anyway my X-0 flip levers hit the top tube....does a doozie on the carbon.

Oh...I own a '06 Opal myself :)

I was in the Trek store in Chula Vista today and they have a Superfly, what a bad ass bike. It weighed in at 22 lbs w/o pedals. That may just be my next bike
