Holding up fine, although the Rampages were a bitch to get on.

My only gripe with the Stans is the pain in the ass it is to switch tires. Otherwise, its been great.

I just borrowed a Surly 29er Karate Monkey with drop bars for a few days...Took it out to Caleveras for a thrashing to see what the real differences are. Here's the Danimalism on this bike.

The Karate Monkey:
The GOOD: Eats up flat land and downhills well. Rear wheel DIGS into the ground on steep uphills. I've never felt traction like that before. Felt like the first time. I also thought it would be difficult to bunnyhop with and ynow, it wasn't at all. I bunnyhopped a 65 lb coyote in fact...as he bit my leg. I did like that I was able to chmp on small hills with ease. Also vers surprising but it did well on the highly technical uphill. The ruts and obsatcles that could bump you and mess you up are mminimized so if you do keep your pace pedaling, your good.

The BAD: If I didn't start an uphill at a fast pace, it was hard to make it all the way up. May not be fair since I don't even know what spinning up a hill is anymore. I mash in the highest gear possible, and that's harder on the 29er. Also, I notices on a road downhill when I got out of the saddle, the bike became wobbly. Maybe that's because im not used to drop bars but it was there...

The UGLY: Hard to shift with the levers at the end of the drop bars and to switch hand placement throughout a ride. I may be sold on 29er (may) but probably not on the drop bars. Although it was uber-cool to hit the flats in the crouch!!

Overall review of 29ers (or just the Karate Monkey) Cool bike if your in race shape. I thought I was but on a 29er, im not.Would I be faster on a 29er in a race? Today no...in a year maybe. Plus the frankenbike look of it is a great conversation maker out and about.

I've been wanting a Karate Monkey for some time now. Thanks for the review.

Chuck's into the drops. He showed me his 29er with the drops a couple of years ago. I wouldn't go with them either. Some swept bars would be nice though.

Those big wheels need a bit more momentum. What you should do is ride a SS for a while and you'll start standing earlier than you normally would.
