Post subject:  Ive Got A New Project (complete)

I am putting together a 29er for the summer, I am collecting parts but I need some knowledge. I have always been a if some travel is good more travel is better kind of guy. I don't know much about the XC world. I am leaning towards Stans Crest, or Arch wheels I can find them on ebay for around $300 used and thats in my budget range. I am thinking I want a Fox fork, but I again need to keep to about a 300 price. I'm going 2x10 and I'm going to go SRAM with the drivetrain and brakes/shifters. I have only used Shimano parts on my mountain bikes in the past but, I have nothing but good things to say about my SRAM road components, so I'm going SRAM. I have shifters and derailleurs, but I need brakes whats the consensus on avid brakes? I am liking the Elixir 7s but, I see many of them on ebay don't have clamps because of the matchmaker system? Is the matchmaker system hype or help? I'll get some photos up later. Thanks for the knowledge.

I would just get shimano xt brakes. They are cheap (blue sky cycling usually has them cheap) and they work well. Unless you can affort Codes, I have not been very happy with avid brakes.

Ditto Evdog! Best brake around for the money. I have been Shimano averse for a lot of years now. Trying to be a good SRAM customer. I bought a used Yeti SB95 a couple of months ago with the XT's on it. What a wonderful difference. Just rock solid and terrific modulation. I guess both companies have their strengths.

I am running BB7 brakes on all my bikes and they haven't slowed me down. They work great no mess.

Yup... another vote for XT - although I had good luck with Avids, most positive user opinions trend to XT right now. I've had several very good buying experiences with Backcountry.com. No tax, free fast shipping on orders over 50 bucks etc. etc. They are showing in stock, on-sale, and $115 per wheel this morning for the XT BL-M785 series.

btw... I'm a Clydesdale and a torture-test of any braking system.

I don't think I'd recommend brakes that don't slow you down.

The SLX brake reviews say they are the performance equal of XT, and Blue Sky has them on sale as well, for less.

Unless you are a lightweight I'd stick with the Arch over the Crest rims. You can find some DT rims with similar specs to the Stans too (470, 520). You might find a used Fox or Rockshox in that range, if not Pricepoint or Jenson are clearing out the Manitou Tower forks for about $250. I haven't ridden one but they are supposed to be good for the money. The SRAM 2x10 is good stuff but make sure you get the right gearing. The ratios change with 29ers so you likely want 38/24, 39/26, maybe even 36/22 depending on your fitness, stay away from the 42/28. Pair it with a 36 tooth cassette.

Bought Wheels today brand new Shimano MT66 Wheels and rotors 180/160. Cory: I received your knowledge too late I already got a Truvativ XX 42/28 crankset. I'll just have to grunt it out I guess. I still need a fork and some brakes, but I think I'll go with the SLX or XT which ever I can get the best deal on.What is the consensus regarding Rock Shock Rebas? I have bought Fox forks sense way back when and I have not even tried any other brand.

For Reba's the 2012 and older models are great. My dual-air reba is going on 6+ years of service.

I've not heard anything good about the change from dual-air to single-air in the 2013 models. Never tried one myself, just passing along the word of mouth.

Making progress! I bought a used Rock Shox SID dual air fork on Ebay. I have not owned a rock shox product sense my Judy DH days. A new set of wheels arrived yesterday. 12-36 cog set is in the mail. I still need brakes and a stem/bar combo. I hope to be test riding it by the end of the month.

I need a headset, a new one is on the way, and to string up all the cables all two of them and I'm fireroad rippn. I got the frame for free! Its a SM/Med 17" and I have about a grand in parts. Almost everything is new except the cranks and the fork, the frame was a floor model that was town down for parts so it has only parking lot miles on it. I am hoping to do some bike camping this summer. This frame has rack mounting points which is getting harder to find these days. I should be riding it as soon as the headset gets here. I'm thinking about the Cuyamaca's this weekend if all goes well.

XTs are more powerful, Avid XO trail more modulation same power. Avids below XO may have more fade less power. Good times building a bike.

I choose the Shimano SLX Ice Tech Brakes. I got them from Blue Sky They were less than $100 a wheel and I have yet to read or hear a bad thing about them. I wanted to go all SRAM componets, but the reviews for the Avid brakes in my price range were not so good. So I've got a Franken bike happening, Sram drive train, and Shimano wheels and brakes UPS tracking says my headset is in San Diego. If not today ...then tomorrow Ill be riding it.
