I'm trying to set up my budget single-speed conversion (vertical drop outs) to run without a chain tensioner or eccentric bottom bracket. The chain is too tight with a 20T cog and too loose with an 18T cog. Does anyone have a 19T I could try, or can anyone recommend a shop likely to carry a half link for an 8-speed chain? |

It's a 3/32" chain, commonly used on 8-speed cassettes. Half links are made for them, but I don't want to spend 4 times the cost of the half link just to get it shipped. I don't want to buy a single speed chain because this is a budget single speed (which means I'm cheap). |

Bike Bling does as well. Not sure which kind, but I know Mike got one there. |

Isn't that why you have vertical dropouts? What size chainring are you running? |

I had the same problem on my Niner when I had it set up single speed. A half link will work temporarily until the chain gets stretched and then you'll be in the same boat all over again. Best thing would be to splurge on a tensioner. The Surly singleator is relatively cheap. I will check and see if I half an extra half link in the tool box, but I would still look into a tensioner. |

If you aren't already using one, the SRAM connecting link acts as a half link ... |

Unfortunately, it's being used, sorry! Hey Eric, I know this is G-H-E-T-T-O, but once, just to make a ride, I actually used a derailleur as a tensioner with the stops set so they wouldn't move. It worked.... For a while, I was abe to run without a tensioner, but I was running a 33-18 with the chain @ 50% wear and it worked great (a wee bit tight) until the chain stretched out, then I had no choice but to get a tensioner and a half-link! Oh well, such is life with single-speeds! |
