It's been a long time coming, a genuine singlespeed. I've been riding my conversion since '02 or so and it's still a great bike... but all my friends have snazzy new niners, ma, and I want want need! The only problem is that I'm on a low budget and I couldn't "build" a bike for less than 3 grand. WTF? WTF, I say? Forget it.

Ah, I read a post in the main forum here about I bike I'd read about in DirtRag, the Trek 69er. Sure enough, they were on sale because the crappy, nearly worthless '08 models hadn't sold and dang if the XL doesn't fit out like a Manitou or Fisher frame... I didn't like everything about the OEM bike (175mm cranks on a big bike?) and I spent some time on the phone with Maverick to ensure I could rebuild the fork to support my increasing mass, then I specced a few changes, made an offer, let it stew for a while and it all went down. Since Friday, I've been using what spare time I had to rebuild the fork with thicker oil, a revised shim stack profile, ptfe stanchion treatment and etc..., swappin' a few parts and converting the wheels over to tubeless with sauce.

Today, finally got to take it out, all dialed in for my weight and decrepitude and it's great! I built the fork stiff, but it's plush, the 2.55 WTB's fit in there and I had a blast riding these Poway trails, although I overdid it and wound up with cramped legs.

Anyway, here's my new 69'er SS, er in the next post

Nice bike! Clean looking too with the Mavericks matching the frame. We might have to set up a DT clyde singlespeed ride.

Is it just me, or do those "Poway Trails" look awfully similar to a place that rhymes with "funnels"? :?:

I was going to ask the same. Looks like a fun bike if you're into that type of punishment.

That is a sweet bike. If the prices that I saw a few weeks ago at Trek Kearney Mesa are an indication, you got a sweet deal too.

A buddy has that bike and likes it a lot, although he says the ride is a bit odd, another buddy has the geared 69er that he loves.

Bang for the buck? Cannot be beat. Good job I say.

You guys haven't ridden the Poway trails? I'm a fat old man that barely rides and I know a secret you don't? Ho ho ho ho ho ho!! To those of you that think I poached the CamRu, I say "no, sir." I'm waiting (interminably) for that one. What are these funnels you speak of? Is that in Daley?

Punishment is right, but deserved. I am working, eating, working, Scouting, eating, working, eating, bla bla bla and rounding out. To reinvigorate my riding and to do my part for America, I decided to spend my way into motivation. I hoard spare parts and don't replace things until they're broken/worn, so I'd forgotten what it was like to have a stream of boxes coming in from various shops, not to mention the patois of the "shop manager"... Let's not talk about the sticker I had to peel off the headtube (WTF?!), but the bike rides great. I geared it lower than my other SS, to motivate me into climbing again.

I set the seat-bar length along the top tube to match my Manitou and Fisher bikes and used bars and grips of identical dimensions to my other bikes. Although the drop from seat to bar is a little different, it's not much, and it rides very much like my older SS, but I might finally admit these disc brakes are maybe a touch better than those old Avids. The front end handles bumps, roots and ruts nicely, that's for sure. The Mav is more plush and active than the setup I have with my Black on the Manitou, but the lock-down more than solves it on climbs when I have time to switch over--very cool. Since it's a 26" rear end, I don't have to relearn gearing.

Say you happened to get lost and ended up on a closed trail... and Ranger Bob happens to be passing through. How ugly of a ticket would you end up with? (Sorry for the off topic).

Nice bike and pics, BTW!
