I’m not sure I was ready, but now that I got home to find a new puppy, I must say I love him. But what cold-hearted bastard doesn’t love a puppy?! This Is Paterson*, our Lab-mix rescue from Mexico. Size and disposition TBD. Hope he gets along with the cats! He has a curve to his tail that we’re curious to see where it comes from.

* The name is tangentially in keeping with our cat naming convention, who are all poets or writers. Paterson is a movie starring Adam Driver (my wife has a crush on him) as a poet, and references William Carlos Williams, the famous poet from Paterson, NJ.

We had a cat (Jack Bob Zero, aka "Jack") who had a short tail with a permanent kink in it - we were told by the rescue folks that it was the result of inbreeding. Jack was a great cat and I'm sure Paterson will be a great pup. Congratulations.

Good news was requested, so here it is. :) We really thought we were going to take a six month break from the 'dog-life' after Dee passed two weeks ago, but life is funny that way and said "nope - you need a dog in your lives and you need one now!" We listened.

As some of you already know, this is Luna; a 3-year old rescue from Mexico. She's part cattle dog and part TJ street dawg. Appears not to have much, if any training. Super intelligent though. And stubborn. And sweet. And awfully pretty. The house feels more full already (and hairy).

Welcome home Luna.

He did great on his first off-road adventure, and he’s a natural trail dog.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself - they're both so damn adorable.

Lol. Patterson appears to be part Wolverine. I mean, look at that damned hole he dug in the boulder.

We DirtTreaders can be a sentimental lot when it comes to the dogs we’ve lost. Here’s a poem for us.

After We Buried The Dog In The Dark

by Jin Cordaro

He came back. I saw him
in the grass, the white of him
glowing in the floodlight,
the wind turning it off
and on again.
I saw his face at the door,
waiting to be let in,
his nose leaving smears
across the glass.
Days later I heard him
in the kitchen pacing blindly
for his supper and
that night a soft crinkle
as he shifted in his bed.
Love wants to be fed.
It will return
again and again,
holding a memory
firmly in its jaws, and
you must throw or keep.
It will grow old,
too weak to walk.
You’ll carry it everywhere
at the end until it nods,
turns in a circle,
lies down.

Had some friends and family out at the new pad yesterday, just having a good time. While sipping on some frosties we were tossing the tennis ball over the hillside for Luna, who was having a great time. Up to the point where she yelped and came limping over the top, nursing her paw and crying profusely. Pretty obvious it was a snake bite. An hour and a half later we dropped her off at the 24-hour vet for antivenom treatment for the night.

We found the serpent, dispatched it, and are on the lookout for others.

R-snake avoidance training had already been scheduled, but unlikely to have helped. Did not appear she even knew it was right under her - she was focused on getting the ball.

A suitcase full of money later, she's back home today with the cone of shame and weak in the knees, but doing well and going to make a full recovery.
