Sipping on some small batch sour mash, tossing feed to the turtles and bream, and waiting for the evening flyby of great egrets, herons, and cranes. Yesterday morning a great egret — they are white — flew downriver about 6AM on a gray morning, about a foot above the glassy river, so that it and its perfect reflection slid noiselessly by right to left, gone in four or five seconds without flapping.

I was surprised to finally find an IPA I liked in this town. The grocery stores and liquor stores have lots of the usual American and Mexican beers, and a wide variety of Southern craft brews. However, it is always hit or miss with the craft brews, mostly miss. I’ve yet to find a good West Coast style IPA. So when we went to a funky little combo of crawfish shack and convenience store on the, uh, low-income side of town I was completely surprised to find a six-pack of Stone in the cooler. Turns out from the date on the cans it had been there about a year and a half! The upside-down labels were an advertising gimmick Stone started in 2020. But damn, it was good served ice-cold with a steaming heap of crawfish. I bought thirty pounds of fresh live crawfish, and my nephew got everything right and cooked up the best batch we’ve ever had.

and of course I had something to sip. Turn up the sound…

that’s a stainless flask, half full of fine cask-strength whiskey, rocking after being set back down on a concrete pad. funny what you notice all alone in the dark with no other sound except distant frogs and an even more distant intermittent booming from Camp Pendleton…aka “ the sound of freedom”. Appropriate on a day that observed the cost of freedom.

Sorry to see this bottle emptied, but Rick said it was National Bourbon Day, so I had to honor that (along with Flag Day and my grandfather’s birthday) with a drink.

A bike ride and a bourbon before noon is a damn fine way to spend a Tuesday morning.

Sapporo has a long history in lagers but not ales. Curious to see how this plays out.
