The ice does not last long here in a glass of Maker’s Mark, even after dark.

A Rhinestone Life from Great Raft Brewing in Shreveport. It is a passable New England style IPA. I have to say that in my experience, southern breweries do not do a good job on IPA’s, and they are not popular here…chicken or egg story perhaps? Would locals here like a good San Diego IPA? I don’t see them in stores.

This Abita IPA is not too bad really. Yesterday in the late afternoon when it cooled off my nephew and I paddled the canoe down that way and up a narrow and overgrown side channel to drink a beer and look for a gator or loggerhead. Didn’t find one, but did get some good photos of herons, egrets, an owl, and moss-draped cypress trees in the water. Too bad the photos are somewhere on the river bottom along with my phone...oops.

Went to a favorite brewery down South — favorite more for the unique location in an old cotton gin building than for its beers. But it turned out that I liked their APA much more on tap than from the dusty cans I’d picked up last week at the local drive-thru liquor store (mixed drinks handed to you in your car!). So I had a couple pints and a pulled pork sandwich under their Big Ass ceiling fans whilst watching some friendly locals warm up for a cornhole tournament. You know, that beanbag game, not the Dueling Banjos thing.

I picked up a bottle of Uncle Nearest to enjoy at home. I tasted some of this brand several months ago and really enjoyed it — definitely recommended. If you’re unfamiliar with it, it’s quite a story. This is the first American whiskey to be named after a Black distiller, and that man was Nearest Green, a slave who taught Jack Daniels the art of whiskey-making. It’s true — google it. Thanks to good timing and savvy marketing by Fawn Weaver, the Black woman who researched the history and is the CEO (also a first), this whiskey launched very successfully in 2017 and is winning awards.

This is a Texas beer, a Karbach Hopadillo IPA, and it’s delicious, which is a small consolation. I just made last call at the bar in the f*cking Houston airport. My puddle jumper to here was three hours late due to bad weather and now I’m spending the night with some other lost souls in this damn over-air-conditioned place to catch the first plane out to SD in the morning. Can’t wait to get home and ride my bike.

Ughhhh, airport delays are the worst! I know they're a 1st-world problem but when they happen (and they happen often), it's so efffing miserable.

Welcome home (in the future).

Thanks! In the middle of the night I remembered that a guy had spent years living in a major French airport, so I looked him up. Here is the spot in the departure lounge where Mehran Nasseri lived for sixteen years. Some special kind of hell! I just had a daypack. I stole one of those neck pillow things from a closed kiosk and left the tag and a twenty on the counter. That helped a little.

Pulled a Colorado favorite off the shelf.

Dan, you seem to have had a great trip South (except for the lost phone and Houston layover). Thanks for all the 411 on Southern booze and beauty!

A friend offered up the last of this bottle of Powers Irish Whiskey tonight, brought back from Ireland, and new to me. I was surprised that it smelled - and tasted - like one of my favorites, Balcones bourbon from Texas, which we confirmed since that’s what I had in the flask. Closer inspection of the label showed they are both copper pot distilled. Interesting.
