Thinking of a quick trip next weekend to the St. George area or maybe Las Vegas.
Just checking to see if anyone else will be riding next Fri-Sun there.
Any trail suggestions for an old man will be greatly appreciated too

Have you been to Hurricane/St George in the past? What time do you plan to leave on Friday and come back on Sunday? Traffic can be hideous, especially coming home on Sunday.

Assuming you haven't been there and not knowing what type or riding you like to do, here are the "big name" trails in order of difficulty....
Church Rocks (St George)
JEM Trail...an IMBA Epic and many, many people's favorite. Closest thing to "flow" (Hurricane)
Guacamole Mesa (Hurricane....Virgin area actually)
Barrel Roll, Prospector, Sidewinder...mostly XC'ish but has it's share of obstacles & chunk (St George)
Gooseberry Mesa....THE CROWN JEWEL...nothing like it anywhere (Hurricane)
Little Creek Mesa....Gooseberry with more variety, hardest to navigate (Hurricane)
Zen Trail (St George)
Boy Scout Trails (Hurricane)
Grafton Mesa...solid black terrain, plenty of opportunity to get hurt (Hurricane/Virgin area)
Flying Monkey...legit double black terrain (Hurricane/Virgin)

Wire Mesa is an easier mesa riding area out next to Grafton Mesa but not really worthy IMO. Hurricane Rim is and XC type trail that connects up with JEM that I'm not fond of either. I can do XC type stuff anywhere.

Some misc info:
* Mesa miles are tough, 15 miles on Gooseberry Mesa will feel like 15-30
* Your tires will grip on the rock out there like no other place you ride
* the Over the Edge bike shop in Hurricane has a Saturday morning, "no drop" group ride
* If you come back on Sunday afternoon, be prepared for 10-30+ miles of traffic coming home

Great stuff K2

Rode The Jem trail 2 years ago with a torn Achilles. I self shuttled it up and back down it to the car.
Really nice near the end as far as the view but really was underwhelmed overall. Kept wondering what all the fuss was about the trail. Mostly ST through the desert but it did flow nicely for the most part.

Being that I would be riding by myself probably & being an old fart, I'll stick to trails for the views and not Black ones . It looks like there is a close trail system with plenty of options just west of Grass Valley/west of 15 in St. G

Bootleg is much much closer and faster without some of the risks you will face especially on Flying Monkey.

Dirtrider....those two systems "easier" trail systems that you speak of are:

Bearclaw, Stucki Springs & Snakepit https://www.mtbproject.com/trail/704706 ... i-snakepit which is the easiest (and least fun) of the two. Zen, the best trail in St G, is also over here if you want to take a step up on the effort scale. We ride it CC from the lower parking area which gets the climbing out of the way at the start. It has a couple areas of exposure as you finish the climb but you can walk those. Other than those couple spots, I think the trail is "blue" for the most part.

The other is the Barrel Roll, Sidewinder & Prescipice I mentioned and it's a great trail system overall. Sidewinder has some sketchy switchbacks and one nasty corner so since riding solo, you may want to stick with Barrel Roll which is a natural loop anyway and quite frankly, probably the most popular "locals" ride in St G.

If you don't already have lodging, check VRBO at the last minute. We got a two bedroom one time for NINE DOLLARS per night at Sports Village which is 1/4 mile from riding. There was a $100 cleaning fee but our total was still only $127 for (3) nights.

I like all the trails in the area. Don’t have a favorite but if you check elevation profile of the trails you can choose what you have energy for. Wire Mesa might be similar to dead horse point state park in Moab if you remember it. They don’t recommend going into the area from Rockville side but it’s very short so I would try it if weather has been good. Hope you had fun

Apparently that road is going to be paved. Which will suck because it will bring a lot more van-life douchebag traffic up the hill.

And yes Tom, if you have a van, you're one of them. :P
