After my successful service with my wife's Pike fork, I decided to do the same lowers service on my Fox 36 fork. Naturally Fox and Rockshox require a completely different set of tools and oil so I had make another financial investment on my part.

Overall things went mostly well. Per usual I had difficult time getting the lowers back on the stanchions. I eventually figured out it was easier to do it by taking the bike off the repair stand (where it would move around) and just lie it upside-down on the floor, where it was much more stable.

BTW, this is the first service of the fork after about a year of owning the bike. The foam rings were absolutely filthy and the wiper seals were slightly warped and even had some markings on the inside. On the plus side, there was plenty of oil still in the lowers and the oil didn't look too dirty. So overall I'd say it was time for the service but i wasn't completely negligent.

I suppose I'll have to service my air shock next...

I do have one question. The manual calls for a torque of 50 in-lbs (5.7 N-m) for the lower bolts. I have a "high value" (i.e. cheap) torque wrench. I followed the feedback from the torque wrench faithfully, but it felt like a really low level of torque. Does this sound right?

thanks!

Yeah, 50 in lbs is a pretty low value and a person might think it felt low.

But do you think this sounds like the correct value to use?

It probably is correct and should be fine. I would tighten it by feel more than by a dial inch pound torque wrench but I have turned wrenches for a living and have a "feel" for it. Over tightening isn't needed and the fork won't fall off. You don't want to strip out the nut or crush the rubber washer either.

Yes, according to a Fox manual I looked up. As Dirtrider said, that’s one you definitely don’t want to damage.
