I was going for just the first song, but that's not a bad playlist.

For tfitz:

Duane Allman played lead for John (no slouch on a guitar himself) on four cuts on this album, including this song (included on Duane Allman Anthology).

I revisited versions by the old blues masters Mississippi Fred McDowell, Blind Willie Johnson, and Reverend Gary Davis just to validate what a great adaptation Hot Fuckin’ Tuna did.

I searched "Mellotron" and this came up in the results - such a great song and video. I can't believe this is the first time I have seen this.

Another for tfitz, who’s in Georgia for his son’s wedding.

This was my favorite song back in 1976, when I had a brief career as an interstate trucker, co-driving my buddy’s ‘68 Marmon cabover. Winding out that Detroit Diesel, rowing through the gears on the RoadRanger tranny, and taking back roads around the scales. I had never been to the East Coast, and was stoked when we got a load of seafood destined for Statesboro. Arrived late in the day, backed the trailer doors up tight against a phone pole to deter thieves, and set out on foot to hit the bars. Damn that was fun!

Guess I'm posting covers tonight.
Canaan posted The Weight above and it reminded me of this cover.

Such talent.

This was my favorite song back in 1975, when I had a brief career as a high school sophomore, before I knew much about the blues. I consider this a gateway song....

This is a great version, too. I love the stripped-down sound, and Mavis Staples might have the perfect voice for this song.
