Weird. I wonder if it has anything to do with the man that died in the park?

On the other side, Carlsbad has turned cameras off in the not to distant past.

wow, I ride by that one all the time, it is on a legal entrance to the Calavera Trail systems which makes me think they are only looking for numbers of users in the park and belong to Carlsbad City.

There is a lot of old barbed wire out in various parts of the park, very pristine.

I moved the posts and
wire into the bushes.
Shouldn’t be a problem now.
For the record it wasn’t barbed
wire, just the regular 3 wire that
decorates our pristine wilderness
area.

Image

Another “fence”, I thought it might be barbed too.
It’s not.

Another angle.

^^^^ This..
Might be a good thing if they are getting user counts. It lends to the argument that the people need this to stay open and not be sold out to homes. The posts being right in your face and not hidden makes sense.

[read this is a very sarcastic tone]

Are you trying to say the city of Carlsbad would kill open space and trails in order to give a home developer a big payday???? say it aint so.....

Not even sure where to post with all the Calavera threads, but I received the email below from Mr. Gabe from F&W today. Job security I reckon, but what a pity to call yourself a scientist when really, you're just tasked with being an enforcer for a minority group of selfish elitists. I get that there is a law in place, but otherwise, what load of horseshit. What d'ya say guys? Wanna just band together and buy hundreds of acres of North County property for biking? Just a drop in the bucket, no?

BTW, can anyone confirm that hiking these trails is truly illegal? If so, I'm gonna lose it.... Or maybe, since they won't enforce it, I'll just hike my fucking bike through all the trails while watching birds that shouldn't even exist there due to the mass destruction from mountain bikers.

"Thank you for your interest in Carlsbad Highlands Ecological Reserve. The Department of Fish and Wildlife has been discussing and working with various user groups and local agencies like the City of Carlsbad on bike riding at the reserve, and have determined it is prohibited by state law, so the law would have to change in order to allow mountain biking. It is the mission of the Department to provide habitat for wildlife, providing non-wildlife dependent recreation opportunities is not our purpose. The Department has suggested to the San Diego Mountain Bike Association to either purchase a property for the specific purpose of creating a mountain bike terrain park or partner with the surrounding cities in the creation of such a park.

The Carlsbad City property Lake Calavera Open Space Preserve provides a legal opportunity to ride a bicycle in an open space environment. The property is directly north of Carlsbad Highlands Ecological Reserve and is a featured trail on the MTB Project website.

Additionally the Department will be engaging the public to determine which hiking trails will be decommissioned and restored and which will be officially recognized.

In addition, our experience with a significant number of mountain bikers at the ecological reserve has been less than ideal, with vandalism, theft and destruction so common that we have determined we must have enforcement personnel to try to control those criminal activities, and any others that may dbe occurring at the ecological reserve. Any illegal activity on the ecological reserve will be addressed.

We hope you will consider taking part in the allowed activities at the ecological reserve including hiking, running, bird watching and nature study.

Sincerely,

Gabriel Peñaflor

This was posted on the facebook group as well. And I will say here what I did there. This is only happening because the closure blew up in their face. If they had any smarts they would have planned all this out well before the anti-MTB campaign was started and all the new signs went up.

I also feel they had waited because they hoped to drive a wedge between hikers and MTB and that did not happen at all. Now when they try to blindside the hiking community by shutting down all the trails the hikers actively use there will be even more blow back against them for their ridiculous stand on this issue.

From 2002 to last summer ALL the signs at the property stated NO ACCESS, NONE. Then mysteriously they changed to say pedestrian access allowed on all the trails created by cyclists. Then they ran this anti-MTB campaign and said they are stepping up enforcement specifically because of all these trails created by cyclists and that the trails themselves are a danger to the environment (they are not). So in one breath they say trails are bad and in the next they say hikers can use them but cyclists cannot..... Total hypocrisy, and they were called out.

So now they are back pedaling under all the pressure that SDMBA and Calavera Trails Coalition are putting on them.

I am actually very curious to see what trails they keep and what they make off-limits.

Is he referring to the signs being knocked over as three different "crimes".

I have been "hiking" out there in the afternoons and the Wardens are no where to be found.

On my hike 1 week ago I took a number of pictures of the real environmental issues out there, things that CDFW refuses to fix, things that are a real threat to plant and animal life, things that were not created or made worse by cycling or hiking.

I don't have an external hosting site, so I might post the pics up on MTBR since that site will let me upload images to it directly.

So, basically, that Gabe fella is a tool for the enviro extremists.

Of course, this was pretty much what went down with LPQ, too, back in the day. All those ST cow trails under the trees along the creek had been improved and buffed by the cyclists, making the horse gentry want them for themselves. Thanks for the free help. Now get out.
Gabe will become a real scientist before the haters change their minds.

We rode our neighborhood loop this morning.
We start at the Vista Sports Park and head east
towards Guajome and Jeffries Ranch. Anyhow,
we ran into a Calaveras hiker. We've seen him
in Calavera for the last 5 or 6 years, he parks at
the church and hikes with a brown dog, super nice
guy.
We asked why he wasn't hiking Calavera? He said
it's different out there now. Very few people and no
mountain bikers. He said there a bad feeling out there
now. He has heard the same from other hikers about
Calavera. He mentioned that before the enforcement
the ladies from Preserve Calavera were approaching him
to talk. He didn't want any part of them, but they were very
persistant. He wasn't very happy with them

My point is, if I have a point, is, mountain bikers aren't
the only ones negativaly effected by this. Really opened
my eyes.

Be sure to brush some of them so we know when new tracks are put in.

I commute home from San Diego everyday and drive up canon and check the locks at the Sage High School gate where Canon dead ends. SO far every single day for the last 2 weeks the gate is closed and locked after 4pm. Word is they only patrol from 8am - mid afternoon on the weekdays. Some have said they leave at 1pm, a guy I spoke to a few weeks ago said he rides his eBike our there every single afternoon and has never seen them after 3pm.

Update from Ben at SDMBA:

Quote:
I thought I could provide a little update. A little bit of our momentum with legislators was slowed during the last month or so with several controversial bills moving through the legislator and many budget hearings.

To provide a little context for the group, since this started myself and SDMBA have met with 3 state legislators on a regular basis. I have also met with the City of Carlsbad, Oceanside and had conversations with the City of Encinitas. These meetings were made possible because of the calls and emails they received from you, their constituents.

Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner Horvath has been especially interested in this issue. Her office intends to hold future meetings on this issue in the area and intend to follower her lead and support their office however we can.

Please understand this is what has been communicated to me by the office. It has also been communicated to me that she met with the Director of CDFW on this issue. Her office is interested in a balanced trails plan and seeing a management plan implemented on CHER.

When I have more details I will share them. SDMBA is looking for meeting space to have a future meeting and invite your legislators offices to send representatives to speak about CHER at this future meeting.
