As some of you may know Fish and Game has once again started ruining the preserve by digging holes and planting large 4x4 wooden posts. I can only assume large signs will be placed on these poles.

Again, they choose to put up signs and leave. Signs WILL disappear and things will go on on as usual. Making the signs bigger is not going to stop those who are determined from removing them.

I rode out there Sunday morning and saw nearly 100 well behaved Mountain Bikers and Hikers all getting along on the trails. I saw a family of 4 riding together, Dad, Mom and 2 kids, we great to see. Personally I was riding out there with my 3 year old.

Fish n Game - I hope you are reading this, your futile attempts to keep hundreds of people out of the public land they have been using for decades is not going to work.

I highly recommend you get out on the trails on Sunday morning and see how happy the trail users are and how well all user groups get along. Talk to the plethora of Families who live adjacent to the trails and find out why they enjoy all the open space. Make note that if you do come out in force and keep people just to the lake loops you will directly cause trail conflicts as hundreds of bikes have to now share a small limited trail system with hundreds of hikers, families and dog walkers. Also if you do this, come on foot or on bicycle, STOP DRIVING YOUR BIG HEAVY TRUCKS ON SOFT SOIL. When you drive your trucks out there you create huge ruts that will take years to re-mediate back to nature. For all the signs about habitat preservation, California Fish n Game has done more in the last few weeks driving trucks around to destroy habitat than Hikers, Equestrians and Bikers have done in 40 years.

Was out there yesterday afternoon with lots of other shiny happy people enjoying the day. Only ‘bad’ interaction was with someone that thought I rolled, at a walking/slow jogging pace, too close to their dog, which was basically darting back and forth within the six foot radius defined by the leash, amongst the many hikers, bikers near the lake. Had wonderful interactions with several groups of hikers on the south forty, away from the crowds. Chatted with a couple out with their German shotrthaired pointers, whose pups were more well behaved off lead, than the other dog on lead (I’ve got GSP, they’re the best. Not biased at all...). Gave some others directions to get where they wanted to go.

Looking forward to another nice weekend ahead.

Off topic, anyone know why there were emergency vehicals and a sheriffs chopper, that landed on top of the volcano, yesterday?

I saw that, the Ambulance was crossing the dam as I was heading out.

I saw on the neighborhood app forums that a hiker broke their leg on the volcano somewhere.....

In regards to general access. I rode on Tuesday and signs that were up on Sunday morning decrying how sensitive the land is(especially where Fish n Game drives their heavy trucks and makes giant ruts....) were all gone by Tuesday evening.

They are already losing the fight and it has not begun yet. I heard from a friend that some of the trail builders plan to cut down the big wooden sign posts and incorporate the wood into the next jumps they build.....

Gonna get ugly for Fish n Game, they are on the wrong side of this one.

What I find so irritating is that the hikers, trail runners and dog walkers prefer to stay around the lake, and the Bikers prefer to ride the south side of the property. By making the lake the only "legal" place for bikes the hikers are gonna experience more and more bikes on the trails. Making the south area of the property hiker only is not going to increase foot traffic in that part of the preserve.....

Just spending 1 afternoon on a weekend out there and observing how the trails are used would have indicated that much to Fish n Game, but they are not concerned with what the people want, just what the Sierra Club is pushing on them.

Any word from the weekend?

I saw one report on mtbr that 2 rangers were camped out at the entrance by the high school. I did a hike down by the lake on Sunday evening with my family and saw a few mountain bikers, but no rangers, of course I did not head up towards the sign.

No sign of any Friday or Saturday. Heard rumor about Preserve Calaveras volunteers out on Thursday to "educate" people. Lot's of empty new sign posts all over the place.

I am a big fan of the Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan and am currently on my 3rd read through(this time via audio book on my commute). The first in the series opens with this paragraph and each other book in the series has a very similar opening with just a different location. I modified it as it seems to fit well here.

Quote:
“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, and Age long past, a wind rose in the Calavera. The wind was not the beginning, there are neither Beginnings nor endings to the turning of The Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”

As before the story is on repeat. Signs go up, signs go down, Fish n game puts a half-hearted attempt in and then leave to go do more important things like Catch Poachers (which I fully agree they should be doing instead of baby sitting a trail system that does not need them involved).
