Thanks Dan.

I called the City of Carlsbad
Parks department and had a chat
with Kasha. She said the volcano
is owned by Fish and Game. Carlsbad
has nothing to do with the land. I told
her that it is in the city's jurisdiction and
that the city need to do something. Hundreds
of people hike the volcano weekly, how
are they going to enforce the closure?????

enforce the volcano closure on hikers.... lololololol. sure. There are nearly 1000 people to the top of that every Saturday and Sunday. Plus people all week long. 24/7 enforcement is the only way to keep people out and frankly Fish n Game have more important things to do.

These are new signs.
You can’t enforce trespassing
while warning not to fall off.
It seems contradicting................

Here’s a photo of the old cave which they sealed off pretty effectively this time, using concrete and rocks. It was really more of a short, shallow tunnel than a cave, and was the powder magazine for the quarry.

Environmentally friendly concrete used and no gnat catchers were harmed thankfully

From the DOF&W web site:

The Benefits of Conservation and Mitigation Banking

For the buyer or user of credits…

Cost reductions over “do it yourself” compliance (due to the economies of scale a large habitat bank generates and passes on to credit buyers/users), together with cost certainty
“One stop” permit compliance including habitat protection, long-term management, maintenance, and monitoring of the mitigation
Decreased permit wait time (purchase or transfer of bank credits immediately satisfies the mitigation requirements of the permit)

For the ecosystem…

Protection and restoration of larger, more functional and longer-lasting ecological systems
No temporal loss of ecological function because protection/restoration is completed before the impacts occur
Management and ownership by endangered species and wetland professionals
‘‘No Net Loss’’ in wetland acres at minimum, often with a gain of wetland acres
Permanent protection in the form of a conservation easement or fee title held by a qualified conservation entity, enforced by a qualified third party

^^^Who's buying/bought "credits"?

• acts to anticipate the future,
• approaches management of our wildlife resources on an ecosystem basis,
• bases its resource management decisions on sound biological information and a clear understanding of the desires of the public,
• is based on teamwork and an open and honest internal communication,
• empowers its employees to make most of the “how” decisions,
• is committed to extensive external communication and education programs , and
• creates and promotes partnerships; coalitions of agencies, groups, or individuals; and any other collaborative efforts to meet the needs and management of wildlife resources.

Whomever wrote those lines has no clue what they are talking about..... "A clear understanding of the desires of the public"? Really? They could care less what the public wants from the Calavera Open Space. The Public wants defined and maintained Trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding.... that is what the public wants. They would need to actively engage with the Public to know that.

"committed to extensive external communication and education programs" - How is that? I have never seen anything from Fish n Game that could be defined that way. Gabe telling people the volcano is off-limits on a Wednesday is not "extensive external communication".

creates and promotes partnerships; coalitions of agencies, groups, or individuals; and any other collaborative efforts to meet the needs and management of wildlife resources. False. SDMBA tried in vain to get Fish n Game to work in coalition..... Fish n Game did not care to participate at all.... What a load of crap.

Meanwhile the old farming roads that pre-date mountain bikes have turned into huge ruts and gullies since they are just fall lines and have no water bars or anything else to keep them stable with all the rain....

While the purpose built and maintained single track are in better shape due to a few "outlaws" that take the time to dig and preserve the land.....

Sorry, this has a place close to my heart and the complete lack of management by Fish n Game irritates me.

All they gotta do is give trail management responsibility to SDMBA and we could have an amazing trail system.
