Talked to a riding buddy who was out at Calavera on the morning of July 25th or 26th (he couldn’t remember) and was stopped as he rode from the area of the tank up towards the pad. The F&G Officer was in a full size truck and stopped on the trail/road. He waved over my friend and then 3 others before taking their photos and giving them an “official” warning. He told them F&G would be out in force and issuing $1000 citations.

Would somebody please give me the lowdown on exactly what rules, laws and tribal traditions are being broken, and how to avoid breaking these rules? It seems that every few months, there is a report on F&G handing out fines/warnings for riding at Calavera. I've never seen any signage so even if I wanted to follow the rules I don't know if I could.

That's exactly the quote you want to memorize should you ever find yourself in front of a judge after riding at Calavera.

To answer your question....in very simple terms....avoid all the best riding on the south side of the wall and/or pad and you'll be mostly okay. That being said, I'm sure other people are more up to speed on the specifics. I personally just avoid the areas that are signed as closed to mountain bikes

Was it a Ranger or was it the gardener Gabe?
He's told us the same a few months ago. If
it's him, he's just blowing smoke.
He chased down a friend of mine at the
church a while ago and told him the same.
His signage is confusing and from what I
know about the laws out there, they are wrong
and in the wrong places.
Also, I haven't seen the Carlsbad Police Ranger
in a while.....................

I double checked and he did say “a rep from Fish & Wildlife” rather than Officer or Ranger. He did say the gentleman was of African American descent. Is Gabe a black guy?

I triple checked and called my source to ask more details. Guy was in khaki pants and on a WHITE truck. Neither of that fits for a F&G *Ranger*.

Gabe is Hispanic.
He drives a white F250.
Usually khaki pants and
a blue polo.
The taking photos is a little scary though.
Once you’re in the system there are no
excuses.

Things don't always stay the same so you might want to enjoy them now, not later, when they are gone

My buddy was stopped by a black guy. Same outfit. My Carlsbad PD buddy says he knows Gabe; describes him as about 5-7 with a goatee? If it's the same guy, he actually has enforcement powers. Like I told my buddy, until they get serious and post legit signage, enforcement is futile. My Carlsbad PD has told them the same. Even after the photos and "warnings from a guy who is clearly not a Ranger...he could be anybody spewing inaccurate information" (words I'd use in court), I wouldn't be concerned.

That's what I was thinking, trucks don't do well on single track.

Ran into this guy at Batiquitos Lagoon a couple weeks ago. Carlsbad PD. Stocky, bald Samoan dude. Nice guy, but he WILL enforce the trail rules! Knows Ranger Gabe and his troubles at Calavera...
