I’ve always wondered why the builders
haven’t gone south. Lots of opportunities
and the land is private. No one will care
till the developers take over!

Great point. I feel bad for all those that did, if Calavera were part of their decision. I would never buy in that area now, knowing that I may not be able to ride near my own backyard.

I wonder if the City of Carlsbad and those home builders even give a shit or not. The reasons we were looking were to be close to those trails and the coast. Oh well...

These are strictly my opinions:

This "development," pun intended, is, I believe, for all practical purposes, temporary in nature.

Land is forever, and people are awesome. Until it is paved.

By legal definition now, the DFG and City parcels cannot not be paved.

The southern piece owned by West, ride it while you can, which will be a few years at the least, and many years at the most.

We rode there today and ran into the Carlsbad Ranger.
We had a good chat with him. I asked if there was anything
new with the Fish and Game land. He said that they had
just got information and authority to enforce trespassing
on the Fish and Game land. Just warnings now until signs can be posted.
He said any trails above and south of the City's land was
off limits to bikes, including"the volcano".

Pretty nice of the rump ranger to add in technical sections for us. In LPQ they remove all the rocks and pave it or build a bridge over it

Maybe I misheard things at that meeting at Zoic a few months ago but didn't Susie and Ben say that they had a deal with DFG? Not that it really matters, but if there truly is a lever left through SDMBA shouldn't that be pursued? Not looking for an answer here, I'll get in touch directly, just venting...

I got this from SDMBA:

Yes, we have been getting on the ground reports since the destruction of trails began out there a few days ago. We have photos and videos of the trails and new signage as well as reports of conversations with Carlsbad Rangers and CDFW staff and we thank the community for getting that information to us. We have a meeting scheduled with CDFW on 11/17. We are working on an update to get out to members and concerned trail users now. Stay tuned.

Glad someone's getting a response from SDMBA, I sent a question to Ben this morning and got nothing back.

Legal Access to State Public Lands - Sign Petition: https://www.change.org/p/state-represen ... blic-lands

We have received a number of reports from concerned trail users about Calaveras, officially known as Carlsbad Highlands Ecological Reserve (CHER) regarding the destruction of elements, new signage, and trail closures. I apologize for not sending out a response faster, but most of us were tied up with the Trail Stewardship Summit we were coordinating in partnership with IMBA, United States Forest Service and the County of San Diego. Ironically, we were highlighting a number of recent breakthrough projects that will be Mountain Bike specific, purpose built and progressive here in San Diego County. These projects are happening across Cleveland National Forest and have buy-in from both Districts in San Diego.

Simultaneously, California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) which has jurisdiction over the CHER property, had decided to tear down features within CHER. We protested to CDFW that this was not a good idea and would alienate the community from any progress at CHER. Please keep in mind we had successfully talked CDFW down from this action two previous times in the last nine months (since we started this dialogue). At this point, we are unsure if this is a standalone action or the beginning of a larger action across the Reserve. SDMBA disagrees with this approach in its entirety. Further, from the images that have been posted, these actions taken by CDFW have most certainly created more dangerous conditions than what existed before.

To be clear on a couple points, SDMBA has not produced any priorities for CDFW to review or proposed any legal trail options. When I started this process I asked a number of many unrelated and assorted types of riders to send me their favorite trails. To my surprise, nearly everyone had a different favorite trail/ride. My realization was that SDMBA nor CDFW could simply design something the community would want. The community would need to be engaged in a meaningful way and heard at a public setting. Only then could a plan be produced through community feedback. This fact/sentiment has been expressed to CDFW and to date CDFW has not followed through with their commitments on this project either. They have not produced any maps of sensitive regions, started the process of adding mountain biking as allowed use or started the process of developing a plan for public access.

If anyone thought this could be fixed in 9 months they may have had some unrealistic expectations on this plan and based on CDFW recent actions we believe this will be a long and difficult process. The only guarantee I can make to you at this point is SDMBA will not give up on this issue and will keep the pressure on.

So what can you do?

#1. Call Your State Representative - We need you to pick up the phone and call your State representative today and tell them how much this area means to you. If this area really matters to you, pick up the phone and call your two local California State Reps for the Carlsbad area. WE NEED OVERWHELMING SUPPORT. If you live outside of Carlsbad, check your rep here http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/

Senator Pat Bates 36th District 760-642-0809

Assemblyman Rocky Chavez 76th District 760-433-7601

#2. Sign this petition - https://www.change.org/p/state-represen ... blic-lands
At minimum we ask you to also sign this petition and ask your friends to sign on as well. We think adding mountain biking as an allowed use on CDFW property would be a step in the right direction and would show a level of commitment from CDFW towards this process.

We have a number of meetings with CDFW on this issue set before the end of this year and only through legislative pressure can we make a difference.
