Goodbye youth! I am firmly in the grips of middle aged, barreling down the single track of life.

Today I went to the dermatologist to have a spot on my arm checked out. Now I have a chunk carved out of my forearm and another on my shoulder on the way to the lab. Dermatologist is pretty sure it is basal cell carcinoma (skin cancer). She does not think it is too bad but fairly certain it will be surgically removed.

I also had two spots frozen on my face to burn them off. Not even close to as bad as my arm but I am going to look less than pretty once they scab over.

Why am I posting this? I am going to say this in the most politically correct way.

WEAR YOUR FUCKING SUNSCREEN, DIP-SHIT!!!! (said to self, looking in a mirror)

It really works. Besides, if you are fair skinned or not, you are susceptible no matter what your mommy told you. Think I am gonna buy one of those visors that make my helmet look like a sunhat. It is not like I was ever fast enough to worry about wind drag.

Hey, on a plus side, they gave me this really cool, one gallon sports drink for my next appointment. Said it will make me go really, really fast!

GLWS! Good Luck With Skin...seriously. Hope it's just an isolated spot and they get it all. I'm usually pretty diligent about sunscreening before a ride etc., but that's closing the barn door after the horse is out. That horse left years ago. An outdoor life has my arms (okay, and face) looking pretty bad, and it only gets worse. It's even more shocking to see bronzed beach babes from my high school era who now look like a leather purse (sorry...a fine leather purse)!

Welcome to official "old fart'ism". I'm being dragged there against my will, but last year I started wearing one of those neck buffs/scarfs - aka neck gator. Although I was born with a red neck, the buff has cut down on neck burns. You can buy packs of 9 on Amazon for about $15. Well worth it. And I prefer to always wear a long-sleeve jersey which also helps. This damned cheap Irish skin I inherited requires some extra care and attention.....

I always wear long sleeves even in 105 degree temps. REI has some that are SPF 50 and wick sweat very nicely

I got a pair of sun sleeves a while back. They wick well and keep me cool on hot days. And I can still use my big collection of short sleeve jerseys. Otherwise, it is almost only long sleeves.

Good to read you are on top of it. Melanoma is no joke.

Keeping the ship running on all cylinders requires diligence, caution and effort. I am saying this in retrospect, hopeful for the future. GLWSkin!

Go to Sharp if you can - they use a pediatric-sized scope. The prep is the worst of it, but just think of it as spring cleaning for your innards. They had me count backwards from 100, and I was out by 93. Woke up after it was all over and had a David-after-dentist type afternoon. Really not so bad, especially considering that colon cancer is what took my mom. Tell your doctor that adenomas run in your family, even if they don't - they are harder to detect than polyps, so if your doctor thinks your might have them, he or she will be extra careful in your exam.

I'm scoping bright and early Tuesday morning; If I don't survive, come over AS if you care; there's a bunch of spare parts in the garage, the cabinet closest to the door  and tell my wife what my Stumpy is really worth.

Fight club rules apply here where nobody tells the wife what the true value is, or what you really paid for it

GLWScope and no, the pictures or it didn't happen rule doesn't apply here

:useless:

One of my OC riding buddies had a "spot" removed along with a couple of other places frozen off
This is about 25% and the first of 4 digs to get it all out. Yes, it was the real deal too

Image

Here's his zipper afterwards

Image

He has two others places to have removal done and one was said to be a bit larger than this one on his shoulder

This is a good thread although the topic is a bit gross. We all probably have "that spot" over there for years and never thought to have it checked out. Don't wait! Make this your Christmas gift or New Years resolution to get checked out

WTF? It is exceeding statistical laws that so many DTers are getting "scoped" at the same time.

Im turning 30 soon. Not looking forward to what the future has in store at the doctors office.

I am pretty religious when it comes to sunscreen now. But that was after years of being out in the sun already, I feel I may be doomed.
