Alright, for the fourth time in 8 months the bearings in my Hope Pro II freehub body have failed. Sure, they have sent me new parts every time, but is it even worth it. The failures haven't left me stranded, yet. What if I had been out in the middle of nowhere and my hub seized up on me? How would you feel if you had to deal with this? What would you do? Yes, I have considered spec'ing higher quality bearings. I actually just ordered some today from a bearing specialty place on Temecula. After the second failure they sent me a stainless freehub which just stopped the bearing failure from tranferring to the freehub body as well. I also switched to the 10mm through axle after the second failure. I just want to go with CK and never have to worry about it again. I just don't want to spend $400 to do it.

I have the hope IIs and while I haven't had them explode on me like you have, i've had the seal pop out after about 5 months of riding. I pulled it apart, cleaned it and repacked it with tons of grease... it's been rolling good ever since. The upside of doing this was I got them to be quieter; before it sounded like I had a rattle snake on the back wheel.

Life is too short to mess around with moving parts that you rely on. Hope Products are probably good for XC racing types that get replaced after each season. The $55 skewers are also crap. They look great but don't operate very smoothly. The anodizing is rubbing off and the brass washers look like they are going to be toast soon.

Needless to say, if you ride hard on your bike go for something with a well known reputation and pay a little more. CKs or Industry Nines (i've read good reviews on these). I have a Freeride bike coming this week and supposedly the DT 240s are good (they come with the build). I'll ride these for a year but most likely will upgrade to the I9s. http://www.industrynine.net/official/enduro.html

That sucks donkey balls.
The wrench at Bicycle Warehouse has been having some probs with Chris Kings. I guess they are fine for XC stuff, and guys that don't weigh 250lb's, but the customers he has that exceed those two criteria...he has been working on their hubs a lot. Chuck at Pacific Coast was suggesting to stay away from the CK hubs as well (rear) for anything more than XC. DT Swiss has the 440 hubs that are built for the burlier riding styles. I've seen 240's last guys a long time after they beat them year in year out. The DT Swiss might not look as bling as some of the other pimp looking stuff out there, but it is total bling in my book, products that do and exceed what they are intended to.
I9's and Hadleys are total pimp, and I haven't yet heard of them having the problems like the Kings and Hopes. I'm looking at either the Hadleys or the DT Swiss on my wheel build when its time and I have the extra cash...

Darryl,

Don't blame it on the hub. It is you and the way you ride. You put too much stress on those poor things and therefore, they just fail.

Check with a motocross shop and see if they have a hub that you can fit on your bike.

Ali
