For those on the BLT ride Sunday remeber I needed a large allen to change out a pedal well check this out:

I was in REI this weekend and what do I find orange Crank Brothers pedals that match my SS perfectly. I had to have them and the deal maker was they were on sale. I couldn't have been more excited about some pedals.

So I get home and instantly I have to put them on. I first take the non drive side crank brothers(that are red) pedal off and it comes off easy. Then I try to take off the drive side. That sucker wouldn't budge & yes I know which way to turn it. I try everything I can do. Today I take it to my buddy who is a mechanic at a shop and we can't get it to move. We even put the crank arm in a vise and used a allen and a handle bar with nothing. Then the worse thing the could happen. The allen thread strips it was like butter. The threads holding the pedal in the crank didn't strip it was the actual allen wrench part. So we chalk it up to a lost cause I figure am stuck with these damn red pedals forever.

Has anyone ever had this happen? Can anyone think of a way to get this pedal out w/o jacking up my crank threads. OBTW I have White Industries cranks. Any suggestion would be helpful. I really want to rock those orange pedals and what happens if I break the pedal in the near future?

Make pedal wrench flats on the pedal axle with a dremel or similar tool, put wd-4) on axle, tap the bitch axle with a hammer a few times hard, put the wheels on the ground with weight on it, find mechanical advantage, place wrench to go down and loosen that pedal (the hardest part!), maybe use a foot to hold down opposing pedal, PUT ON GOOD GLOVES AND GLASSES, and go for it hard. Hope it works.

I always get screwed up by pedals that only have 8mm hex keys on the inside to loosen. It's all backwards and weird for me and I have drawn blood trying to extricate such pedals from my road bike, usually because I have the direction wrong or bad mechanical advantage or BOTH. Regular pedals with wrench flats on the outside are never a problem for me.

Have you tried heat? I use my mapp gas for just such occasions. When I was replacing Boos pedal a few months back I ran into the same thing. So I got out my mapp gas and gave it some heat....it worked.

Its a very hot burning gas normally used by plumbers to "sweat" copper pipes together with solder.
It burns hotter than butane torches.
The spindle on your pedal is a very hard metal. The metal of your crank arm is a softer metal. When you heat it up, the metal on the crank arm will expand before the metal on your pedals spindle will, thus enabling you to remove the pedal. Would you like to borrow my mapp gas and torche?

Sure this sounds like fun. I am either going to get this pedal off or burn the crap out of myslef.
