If building a 1X9 set up do I want a small, medium or large cage?
Too lazy to look it up :D

Go with the medium cage.

Why do you recommend medium? I run a short on my 2x9 with the obvious disclaimer you have to know what you're doing. But certainly a short for a 1x9 should be a no-brianer?

I suggest using medium as it is more versatile than the short. If you come to need a granny in the future you will not need to pick up a medium cage as you already have one.

Okay, here's how to figure it out for your own purposes:

--determine what cogset you're likely to use.
--determine which rings you're likely to use.
--Look at the maximum "difference" in teeth you can create by shifting those combinations, ie the difference between big/big and pixie/little, counted as number of teeth on the gears. That's called "capacity".

Now, since you're working with SRAM, all you need to know is that has they're set up for 11-34t minimum-maximum cog sizes and 22t max difference in chainrings. Total capacity is 45t for the long cage, 37t for the medium cage, and 30t for the short.

Shorter is lighter, shifts faster and hangs higher, even on hot days, so pick what the math tells you is best.

Buy what's on sale!

Altho, I have a (used) SRAM X0 on board mine, since it is subject to the most abuse of any part, I consider the rear derailleur, a "disposable" item.
