So I have the monkey on my back, been a year since a complete over haul of the bike & this past two weeks, been rebuilding or regreasing.

At Hurkey felt the chain was skipping, when pedaling backwards & hard to shift.
Well when I got home, thought maybe it was a stiff link in the chain, nope lower pulley wouldn't spin by just using my fingers, had to have the chain on it.

Rear brake sounded like a city bus, rear pads were all the way worn down.

Got new brake pads so decided to cut brake hoses & also bleed front & rear brakes.Rebuilt the master cylinder on Juicy 7 brakes.

Went for a ride, this weekend, could tell my hubs weren't engaging right away, they were dry & needed to be re-lubed.So took apart rear hub & re-lubed.

Rebuilt an old Judy XC with 15wt oil & added 130cc to make it supper stiff for SS.

Trued wheels on both bikes.

I just want to ride now,& not work on my stuff hopefully for a while.

I'm in the maintenance dog house. My Titus is about a year and a half old and I have done very little to it. I have 160mm Juicy Three's and the rear rotor is about as round as a potato. The front brake is either locked up or fading. Juicy Elxir CR 185mm Front 160mm rear Beyond Bike sale. CHECK. This bike came with the worst Bontrager wheelset known to man. Hubs pratically smoke and make more noise than a 73 VW going up grade. Hope Pro ll dt 4.2 wheelset on its way from the UK. CHECK. Met the Titus rep at Beyond Bike sale, new carbon rocker without cupped bearing receiver on its way from AZ. CHECK. Bike is down for a couple weeks, time to go fishing.....

I am coming off of maintaining a motorcycle. In the same way, regular maintenance is important. Your life isnt in as much danger if you dont do it, but still possible none the less.
I honestly dont much about bikes but plan on learning it piece by piece. Picked up the book "Zinn & the art of mountain bike maintenance" by Lennard Zinn. From what I heard elsewhere it is the bible of bike repair. I have yet to put it to use though. Its is good reading though very informative.

Duh! I forgot there was already a maintenance tips thread :P

1.- Lube your quick release skewers: Specially after winter riding.
I though I was having problems with my front hub since sometime if felt a bit loose, I checked last night and noticed the skewer too dry and didn't "feel" a normal tight when closed, so I took it apart and lube the whole thing, wiped off any extra lube to dirt won't accumulate and problem solved, works like new!

I have a creaking sound reappear frequently on my Stumpy. Copious amounts of oil into all the crevices of the suspension system fix it for a while, but I'd like to take the whole thing apart, clean and re-lube. Unfortunately I am graced with absolutely no skill in doing this.

I was tempted to get a keg of Stone brew and brats for a crew to gather who knows how to do this. On second thought I'd probably end up with a disassembled bike and a bunch of drunken homies in my garage, but seriously, there is no one in greater need of some bike maintenance class.

I usually upgrade everything at a rate that is faster than things braking and am in the LBS almost as often as on the trails.

a couple of things you can check beyond that:

1) pull out the seat post and put a little grease on it, just coat it.

If that works then that's your problem, if not, try #2

2) pull your cranks apart, clean the spindle and cranks, clean bearing openings, apply new grease, put back everything.

this solved it for me recently.

keep your drivetrain working in top shape.

go to home depot or Rite Aid and buy youself and assortment of kitchen cleaing brushes. the bottle brushes are especially nice for getting inside the deraileurs.

After every ride, turn your bike over or put it in your stand if you have one. turn the cranks and place the brush on the chain, cassette, chain rings, and get in the deraileurs and clean off any debris.

Doing this, I have found that I've had no issues when out on bike rides with chain kinking or mis-shifts.

General cleaning is the biggest prevetative maintenance you can do. And it's so easy too.

Agreed, old toothbrushes are a nice compliment to the other brushes

Some great tips in here! Here are a few I didn't notice but that I use:

--keep Loc-tite blue, a tube of anti-seize and your favorite bearing grease in your work-box. With these, you're set to secure and prep any bolt, bearing or joint.

--when installing external bottom brackets or seatpost collars, put a thin layer of anti-seize on the face of the BB shell and the top edge of the seat tube, too. This kills a potential creak point and it's a waterproof fix. A corollary: don't wipe leftover anti-seize on clothes you like.

--if you can get at them, open up, clean and regrease bearings with good grease at least annually. Don't "pack" them with new grease--50% full is enough.

--if you've got Frogs, jet'em with grease once a month and your pedals will last forever (they're ported for grease injection).

--talc tubed tires. It keeps them smelling baby fresh. Ignore MTBR fads against this.

--pre-inflate tubes before installing them or stashing in your pack for "the spare". The stretching makes them easier to inflate in the tire, and less likely to stick to the casing.

--keep a bottle opener in the tool box.
