The Enve fail post got me thinking it would be nice to have a thread about rims and hubs.

Bad: Easton or Neo hubs - blew through many and it's not because of my massive quads

Good: The Chinese carbon rims I'm running right now. No problems so far. DT Swiss hubs- I have them on my mountain and road bikes now and they are great. Power transfer, ease of maintenance (alright I don't really do any but that works for me), and sound.

I broke a few spokes on Sun Ringel wheels that were supposed to be no tube style rims. They replaced it and I have not had any other problems. I haven’t had any problems with the straight no tubes wheel set with their hubs. But they are 26 inch which probably have much less stress than big wheels and you tried to brake my bike.

I did have a hub go bad on the first Easton Haven carbon wheels but they sent an entire new wheel in 3 days so that was great. The only other issue I’ve ever had was the bearings going bad on the Industry 9 Torch hubs on a regular basis. They knew it was an issue because they’d send out free bearings every time Bike Bling called them.

I guess that means all my other experiences have been good, or at least acceptable. My favorite hubs are probably Chris Kings and favorite rims to this point are the new Santa Cruz Reserves

Going back as far as I can remember.

Mavic- Horrible customer service.
Wouldn't buy a thing from them ever.

Azonic-Warrantied a rear hub. Bling rebuilt it for me.
Great service. Not that they are relevant anymore.

Santa Cruz wheelset- Broke repeated nipples, they rebuilt both
wheels and no problems after.

Novatec-Don't get me started. Okay service if you can get ahold of them.
Horrible products.

Raceface-Nipples started pulling out of the rim.
Warrantied rim, I had to pay for rebuild.

Ibis-Broke a couple nipples a few months ago on front wheel.
They sent me new nipples, had Ryan at Fluid Focus rebuild
the wheel. Couple months later, broke another nipple in the
same hole. Called Ibis and talked to Will, the warranty guy.
Within a couple hours he had a new wheel shipped to me.
Great service!

I'm sure there are more.

Nextie Chinese Carbon rims - over 3 years old and running strong. Will likely order again when needed. Some cosmetic rock dings on these, so will go with a different layup next time - after 3 years, I expect that part has improved.

And as some have heard me holler about before - I really like my Hadley hubs, and the service? There is none better. Will stick with this brand unless there is a great reason to look at an alternative next time I need them. I like that they're in the US and in SoCal.

Yeah, I know - Nextie is Chinese, but with the exception of the Enve crap, aren't all carbon rims built in Asia?

^^^^ avidtest doesn't ride hard enough to push the extremes of his rims

Just screwing with you brother :hello: :hello:

Had Mavic rims on the old bike and my phat ass cracked that poor hub into two pieces. Didn't leave me hanging but it was talking to me back to the work truck.

My new to me/used set of Ibis wide 27.5 + wheels were fine but I did break two spoke nipples on a G out which ended quickly in a flat front tire. Had all the nipples replaced and they have been fine so far.
The rear hub was making a funky clicking sound when pedaling some times so I replaced the hub to the new & much better hub and it's been perfect.

What the H E double hockey sticks? I have never broke a nipple before. Why is that happening over and over? Glad Ibis took care of it though.

I thought the nipples were too short and didn't have enough of the threads inside.
Let's face it, we all need longer nipples for our toys

We rode BLT last weekend.
Somehow stuck a stick in the
rear wheel, pulled a nipple through
the rim and broke another nipple.
The rim was toasted so we finished
the ride. The wheel was still in straight
at the end of the ride.
I thought I was going to have to buy a
new wheel considering I broke it.
I got ahold of Ibis and they told me
it was covered. They shipped a rim
the same day to Cal Coast Cycles, the
closest Ibis dealer.
Cal Coast turned the build in a day!
Amazing service from both.
Can’t say enough about how well they
treated me.

Nice....I've sold off a couple bike and have been demo'ing a replacement. It came down to the new Ibis Ripmo and Yeti SB130. To be honest, the Ripmo won in most criteria but I have to say, Ibis' customer service is definitely worth supporting. I've called up there and had the owner answer the phone...as opposed to Yeti where they give you the impression that you're bothering them.

To keep the post on topic, I should add that I'm building up the bike with the new We Are One 'Union' wheels and Industry 9 Hydra hubs. I got a deal from I couldn't pass up....not that I had a spare set of 29er wheels laying around anyway.

Got 10+ years on my 29er Stans flow rims laced to Chris King (rear) and DT (front) hubs. Never even trued in all that time and zero issues. Wheee!

Then again.... I ride like your grandma
