I try to keep my drive train clean and take the time to clean the gunk off the side the RD gears and chain rings. I have brushed off the cassette and it looks clean but I started to have a funny chain noise & jumpy feeling in the middle gears. I took off the rear wheel, removed the cassette, and separated the cassette. Mine has about 6 different sections of the cassette. I found all kinds of gunk jammed down between the gears which had the chain riding up on the gears not fully engaging.
Just tossing this info out to those that might fix a shifting issue or chain noise.
Ride on and properly hydrate

I use an old hacksaw blade to clean out gunk between the cogs. Spin the cranks backwards and press the blade against the back of each cog, with the non-teeth side of the blade aiming up - works like a charm.

Clean chain, clean pulleys, clean chain ring(s), clean cassette (or single gear). Then lube...liberally.

Clean eyewear helps too

Enjoy your ride where-ever, what-ever you are riding.
