So one of the criticisms I read about the X type cranks is that the bearings don't stand up well to mud and water. Some people found they would just seize up completely after getting wet.

No one I knew at the time had had such problems, so I figured I'd give them a try after finding a deal on ebay.

Fast forward 11mos to our Palm Canyon ride in the rain. No problems in the week or two after, but when I grabbed my bike this morning for a post-trail work ride I noticed the cranks weren't spinning. At all.

So I pulled the cranks off tonite and found poo!

It wouldn't have come from that one ride but the water that turned it to poo certaintly did. Give it a couple weeks to fester and yup, seized bearings.

Luckily I can rob a crankset off my SS for tomorrows ride...

That sucks.

We had someone on the ride with a loose bottom bracket that was squeaking so loud today. It must be in the air for BB.

How do you get that much crap in your BB anyway? Did you grease the cups? Maybe try teflon next time, or in your case, maybe RTV.

I dunno. Ask bjammin, he's the one who installed it

Seriously I don't know how that much poo got in there. I think the x-type BBs just don't have the same ability to seal as the ISIS BB's. But that would have more to do with water.

Pick up some marine bearing grease. Cheap and works better than any other grease I have tried

If you rebuild the bearings, you will be happier with marine grease, Phil's waterproof green, or Finish Line teflon grease. There's always going to be seal/shield issue with those bearings, but if you pay some attention and use good grease (any of those are miles ahead of the OEM spooge), they'll spin a lot longer.
