The rear hub failed, second one to do so in two years. The failure mode was pedals spinning but no power transfer to rear wheel on steep climbs. Very frustrating. So, this next time a superior, reliable rear hub is needed. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Prior rear hubs were Stan's Neo and Easton.

In the midst of this process naturally the thought of getting a better and new wheelset (29er, wide carbon rims) has taken hold. Any suggestions along those lines also would be appreciated. Thanks DT!

$$$ limit? I have a set of NOX Farlow wheels that were originally built up in February 2014 with I9 Torch hubs that constantly had the bearings failing. When I had to re-build them for a "boost" frame, I switched over to Hope Pro 4 hubs. The rims are still riding as good as new and Hope Pro 4 hubs have been fine (I have them on two other wheelsets) but they are no Chris King or DT Swiss 240 hub.

I bought my other two wheel sets from NOBL wheels out of Canada when you could get a set built up with the aforementioned Hope Pro 4's, delivered to your door for $1095. That's no longer the case. I think the same wheelset is $1295 or 1395 now.

A buddy I ride with swears by Light Bicycle wheels and is ordering his 3rd set for a new Intense Primer 29er build that's currently in process. He builds them with Chris King or DT 240's.

Whatever you do, don't ride/demo a bike with the Onyx hubs that are getting all the press lately. They are pricey and heavy but they are sooooooo smooth and soooooo quiet. I didn't realize how bad the engagement was on my Hope's until I rode a bike with those Onyx hubs.

My Hadley's seem bomb-proof.

As for hoops, ultimately, other than Easton, don't they all come from the East? My wide Chinese Nextie's have taking a beating and just keep delivering. Inexpensive, but you have to wait 4-6 weeks for them to arrive. Boo....

A lot of people I trust and respect would say the DT Swiss hubs are the most reliable out there. I was also told this by a few shops in Moab last time when my own Stans hub failed and no one around had the parts for it. I've had good results with Hadley and Hope Pro IIs but would probably go DT next build based on those recs. Stans is apparently well known for the pawls failing under load and mis-shaping or shearing off completely, which is what happened to me.

Yup, it was the Stan's hub that just failed, under load. It was only a couple years old. Add another data point to that stat. Thanks for the info on DT Swiss.

+1 on the DT hubs too

see #5 on my thread: Bike related activities to do when you can't ride

Good reference when you're broke, the bikes broke, your bodies broke, and/or it's raining

5. Dismount your rear wheel and clean out/lube the free wheel. Make sure you don’t over-tighten the locknut if you’re frigging pissed.

That steep hill you broke your hub on was hard to hike up.

Wheels on my rigid carbon have held up well, they are Novatec hubs, but most swear by the DT Swiss 240 or even 340.

China Vendor I would use can build wheels with either hub and has a bunch of 29er Asym rims. 26, 30, 32, 34 inside.

http://www.xmcarbonspeed.com/Products.asp?f2=64&f3=56

Not sure pricing, but $800-1000 should be about right for that kind of wheel.

They respond to emails fairly quick.

I ordered the 40 mm 29er hoops built with 54 tooth DT 240 hubs from Nextie. Fingers already crossed.

I recommend the Light Bicycle wheels from China with DT Swiss hubs. I have 2 pair and my friend has had about 4 pair of them over 3-4 years. We are both around 200lbs and ride rowdy. They are awesome and cheap.

Shipped, the LB wheelset are $1045. Here are the specs I ordered for my Hightower.
115 / 110mm Boost
12 / 148 Boost rear
SRAM XX1
Center Lock 28H
Black DT Swiss spokes
DTSwiss 350 hubs
matte black UD weave stealth
tubeless tape and valve stems.

I put Shimano Xt Rt81 Icetech Centerlock Rotor 180Mm, Centerlock on myself.

That is a very nice wheelset!

Why do you and your friend have multiple pairs of the LB wheels over the last 3-4 years?

Yeah they are nice. I have one 27.5" and one 29" for my Hightower.

The reason my friend has bought 3-4 pairs was that he has multiple bikes. He still has a 2 of the wheelsets on his current 2 bikes and I think he had them on others that he has since sold.

That's what I figured. I plan to use this fact if my wife gives me grief over this purchase!

Am hoping to build up a new bike soon'ish. Two years later, are there any revised or new thoughts on wheelsets and hubs? We've got SC and Ibis with their own wheelsets on the market now. SC is on the hgher end of cost though.

Light Bicycle rims alone now are about $280 for their better "pro" series for rims only. Although a complete wheelset with DT350 or Hope Pro hubs is only $930, so that's not bad. Or less than $1500 for I9 Hydra or Onyx Vesper hubs (still reasonable I guess). Onyx seem interesting, but unsure about the silence. They don't show pricing for a set w/ CK hubs, or DT240S's but they do have a handy drop-down comparison table for a multitude of hubs on the Wheelbuilder page: https://www.lightbicycle.com/Hand-built-AM930-asymmetric-rim-profile-carbon-fiber-mtb-29er-wheels.html

A couple considerations: 29er; Micro Spline; 31mm internal diameter seems to be sweet spot (I expect to be on 2.5 or 2.6 tires). I also want "plenty" of engagement on the rear hub, however you define that.

Are there any standout options out there?
