“Cool tools” are typically overpriced, and not really necessary, but damn, I would’ve liked to find one of these in my Xmas stocking instead of that lump of coal:

Saw that as well and was thinking the same thing. Cool looking tool.

I seriously considered buying this. I like that it combines multiple tools (quick link remover, tire lever, and valve remover).

However, one thing that holds me back is that I have yet to see a reason why I need quick link pliers on the trail. If my chain breaks I use a chain tool to remove the broken link, install the quick links by hand, and then stomp on the pedal to engage the links.

So if I don't need the pliers, then that just leaves the tire lever and valve core remover. Well I already have a tire lever and valve core removers are smaller and cheaper than the $30 this thing costs.

Am I missing something?

^^^ No, you aren’t, except possibly removing an existing quick link, which is occasionally necessary. But there’s always the shoelace hack for that.

I've had to remove a quicklink a couple times when my chain got jammed in between the cassette and spokes including once where the quicklink was in the derailler. Would have been way easier with a real tool. I've snapped tire levers too so having a metal one isn't a bad idea. This is something I would buy.

Post up some more cool tools ‘Treaders!

Here’s a PB review of some new multitools:

https://m.pinkbike.com/news/ridden-and-rated-six-takes-on-the-multi-tool.html

I carry a traditional Crank Bros multitool I’m quite happy with. Of the newer ideas in this link that are striving to be cool, I don’t find any I’d want to buy, except the Reductivist Ringtool, but that would be for a glovebox item, not to carry in place of a traditional multitool or a real toolbox.

Ironically, I lost my 25 year old CoolTool on the CamRu trail a few weeks ago. I have an empty spot in my heart... but I reckon time to look at that tool link.

I did not remember that one, and had to look it up. Nice! I do carry a small crescent wrench to go with my Crank Bros tool.

So, that was actually the second one you’ve lost?

I still have my Cool Tool. It is kept more as a relic of a past, idyllic time than a functional tool. The crescent wrench aspect is nice, but not very useful nowadays, and makes it pretty bulky and heavy compared to modern trail tool do-hickeys. I still use nad bring my Ritchey CPR 13 on every ride. http://www.mtbr.com/cat/accessories/too ... 52crx.aspx It's light, works well, and has just about everything you need except tire levers and a T25 torx, which are easy to add.

Here’s a combo tire lever set and master link plier. Costs way less than the Wolftooth pliers, but probably not as cool...

Yes. The Ti one fell out of my seatbag very early on... and I replaced it with the steel one and swore off seatbags. The steel one is missed.

Kimba, if you get tired of your heavy CoolTool, I will give you $20 bucks for it.

If the Cool Tool gets used and appreciated, I am happy to hand it over to you EBasil.

So the one on the left looks cool, and if you are a shop mechanic, I can see that it would be handy. But seriously, this made me laugh. Look at the price difference. And it’s not like Park tools are crap...but we all know there are some folks gotta have the bling!
