I'm considering converting my Intense Tracer to a 1X drivetrain, I'm looking mostly at SRAM Components, but nothing is cast in stone. Opinions? Advice?

I'm one of those that couldn't imagine riding anything but a 1x11 drivetrain. I have SRAM XX1 on the bikes I ride on dirt and Shimano XT on my hardtail that is my de-facto "road" bike. They have both been flawless from day one and I have no complaints regarding either. I prefer SRAM as well, probably because I'm used to it, but you definitely get more bang for your buck with Shimano. SRAM does have the new lower priced GX line though which I assume is to compete with Shimano pricing.

If I had any real advice it would be to scour the net for pricing on every separate part to get the absolute best pricing. I'll bet I used 6-7 different sources to build my last bike. If you're willing to wait for 3+ weeks, you can get complete Shimano grouppos on eBay for a steal but they are coming from China and take forever.

I just bought one of those
mid size wheeled carbon
wonder bikes.

I wouldn't go with anything
less than 2x11. I love my granny.

I've been shifting a front derailleur
for 30 years. I've had great luck
with it on this bike, no dropped
chains tons of range and granny..........

I've been riding XX1 on my rigid bike for about 1 1/2 year now and love it. I was running a 32 front ring and recently changed to a 34 OVAL ring and so far have no complaints.

On my full squish bike I'm still running 3x10 with XTR shifters, XTR front mech and XT rear mech. I've recently been thinking about converting this bike over to a 1x10, with a 32x40 or 42 rear cassette.

All said, if you wait a few months Shimano 1x11 SLX will be coming out and might be the best Low cost option. If you want to go now, then your choices are pretty open, at this point in the product life, either Shimano or Sram will work fine, just depends on which brand you like better and your price point.

Oh and if you're a Granny like Big Clyde and need super low gearing a 28 front ring with 42 tooth rear is equivalent to a 24 x 36, so you really don't miss anything unless you're running an UBER Granny 22 or something on the front.

There sure is a big gap in the SRAM price range it seems it's either really expensive and light or affordable but heavy. I know the old saying ...Cheep, Light, Strong; pick two. But there doesn't seem to be much of a mid priced option. I already have a XD hub body, so I could run the 42 tooth cassette. The Tracer is no lightweight, and I'm no spring chicken, so 30x42 or 32x42 should work. I am running a 2x10 on my 29er and I like it but I like the idea of the simplistic 1x style. E-bay is offering 8x E-bay bucks for 6 hours this after noon I'm probably gona pull the trigger soon.

Like k2rider, I would not be stoked to go with anything other than 1x11 (32T front and 10-42 rear is what I run). I went a little higher end on the cranks (RaceFace Next SL), but that was far from necessary and you can save a shit-ton of bucks by going non-carbon. XT for the der and an inexpensive XG7000 cassette. Stepped up to XTR on the shifter though. I like clean snickity shifts.

If your knees hurt, consider a 30T up front, or maybe one of those new Hope 9-44 wide-range 1x11 cassettes (lot's of dinero for that though).

Oh, and don't listen to Harley. :ninja:

Up front on my 1X11 I did switch from 32T to 30T instead changing out the rear 42 for a 44. Seems
to keep the HAB down a bit.

If you have the dough right now I'd go to price point and check out if they still have X1 stuff available. It was almost half price last time I checked.

Unlike shimano, I think SRAMs lower build stuff does not last compared to their upper end stuff.

I was putting a new Sram XG cassette on a new XD driver for the first time tonight, always use to standard shimano freehubs. The splines didn't match to the cassette, but that dosen't matter I found out. So after a few mo hops in the belly, I watched : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzFljDt11kE

I've done a little more research, and the Shimano XT M-8000 group seems for me, to give more bang for the buck. My question about the Shimano group is, do I have to change the hub body to accommodate the 42t cassette?

Nope...and depending on what you desire and if you're willing to wait, Shimano is supposed to be releasing an 11-46 XT cassette this month.

XT M8000 is best bang for buck. What did you end up doing?
SRAM GX is good too.
