Hey Treaders, now that Im planning my first ride in over a year, Im asking those of you that own Garmins or other devices to ensure location awareness in relation to trails . What is the best or most popular item?
Or is there an app?

In 2006 I used to be on the geoladders leaderboard and would like to access those boards again with your help..

:hello:

Check out the MTBProject.com mobile app. But if you like being on a leaderboard, sounds like Strava is the app for you.

If you're looking for mapping/navigation, not just tracking, a stand alone GPS is probably best. Otherwise try out the smartphone apps and see which one you like.

I'm not a strava$$hole but use Strava/smartphone for most things (mtb, hiking...) because pretty much everyone I know that tracks their activities does and the social aspect is fun. I also have a Garmin 910XT (their triathlon device) that I use on my road bike and when I open water swim. I upload to Garmin Connect and it automatically imports to my Strava account as well.

Garmin just bought out Delorme so their new devices could have some cool tech coming out with regard to true backcountry travel. Delorme developed tech incorporating satellite based text messaging for emergencies as well as real-time tracking of a device like the Spot beacons.

I second MTB project. It's awesome for finding LEGAL trails in areas your not used to traveling.

I'll 3rd the MTB Project app but the Trailforks app works even better in my opinion. We used it all week in St George and it never let us down.
