Seriously, is anyone obsessed enough to to do this?

I certainly hope not after drinking all that beer  Who knows what his tires would look like

Back in the day in my moto years I did this on my trials bike tires plus before the paddle tire or huge lug knobbies I would do this on the rear of my moto bike for certain muddy/sandy tracks. Tires has progressed since those times long ago..

Yes, and I'm sure on a forum somewhere people are arguing over what are the most effective cuts.

Whether they are skilled enough that it would actually make a difference to their riding is a whole other, comical matter

Actually, that was my "sipping" post, as well as a related "listening" post. I thought I'd try some grooving & siping to amuse myself as well as y'all. I felt like drinking a beer and working on my bike, but it didn't really need any minor maintenance. I was looking for a "Zen in the Art of..." chore. I remembered helping my older brother groove motorcycle TT tires for a race. I had a new tire on hand, and my front tire was actually in good shape, but it was easier to grab out of my car.

A few observations...
Those old TT tires were a lot harder rubber compound, and cut more cleanly with a razor blade.
Rubber does cut more easily when wet.
There's a reason they make special grooving & siping tools.

It went slowly so I decided to do every other knob block...and was approaching the end of the beer at only a quarter of the circumference. I quit and just enjoyed the evening and the beer. The cuts I made probably marginally improved traction, but at the expense of greater vulnerability to rocks.

It was an enjoyable experiment, but next time I'm in that mood I'll just adjust my spokes instead...that's a Zen-like chore that goes very well with beer!

When I first saw the thread title I thought "shit, this isn't going to end well" but then noticed it was in the "Garage" forum and not "Hurt Locker."

i tried something similar w/ nevegals years ago. i thought the transition knobs being so close to the outer cornering knobs kinda hid the outer knobs (compare the large transition space in most maxis and downhill tires). so i siped down every other transition knob with wire cutters (easier and safer than a knife, if you aren't getting too fancy).

i couldn't tell the difference.

so if you want to sipe your tires, have fun, and a beer like dan. but if you're like me it will only be another reminder of how much you suck because you can't tell the difference worth a damn. but, it will give you second thoughts to the usefulness of upgrade-itis next time you get the itch.

Somebody I knew (and this person was most assuredly not me) used to use nail clippers to trim the little injection tags/strings off the tires on his road bike. He's mellowed out quite a bit since he switched over exclusively to mountain biking a few years back.
