After installing the rear clutch der and putting on the front narrow/wide, I removed the top guide. That was about 2-months ago. I dropped the chain once at low speed, pedaling at a super slow cadence; almost coasting. It was odd, but only happened once.

And after installing the rear 40t cog very recently, I removed the lower pulley/guide. Unfortunately the more tweaked chain-line caused rubbing of the chain against the bash guard, so I put the lower pulley/guide back on.

Now that the RAD cage is installed, I'm hoping I can remove the bottom guide for good. I just haven't gotten that far yet.

As for why I run 1x instead of 2x; The bike was set up that way when I bought it. I wouldn't have spec'ed it that way myself if I'd bought it brand new, but as soon as I rode it, I knew it was the ticket for me. I prefer less clutter (and the ideaof marginally less weight... ). In the end, as long as I get the features I want, I prefer to simplify everything else when possible.

What are you 1xguys using for chain guides, if anything?

Bash ring on the outboard side and a Jump Stop on the inboard side.

I run one of these. Works great!
Not only tames the chain, but protects the chainstay from dings!

I ordered and re did my wife's drive train as a 1x10 using the one up components. I ordered the rad cage, 42t cog which came with a 16t cog, and a 30t chain ring to keep it pretty easy on her. I watched the videos from the website for direction on setting it up and it came out pretty good. Shifting is a little slow on that 16t cog because the machining is not as good as a shimano cassette cog. Other than that, it's well worth the money spent.

I noticed with the 16, it can be installed in different rotational positions on the freehub body, not a specific position like the brand name cog, so I rotated it until the little play it had went away and it shifts better. Maybe it's all mental...

I'm running 1x10 with a 32t Raceface NW/10-36 Sram, with an X9 med cage type-2 rear der. And, like Mudd, I use a Bionicon C-Guide. I'm not sure I really need the c-guide but to me the peace of mind is worth it. I absolutely HATE dropped chains. I also run a "bash-wich" - both inner and outer bash guards (from BBG). The inner one isn't so much a bash guard as it is a sort of chain guide, plus I think it looks cool 8)

I went to 1x10 for a few reasons: to clean up the handlebar/cockpit area, to reduce clutter and complexity by removing the front derailleur, to make shifting less taxing on my brain (only have to think about one shifter), to maybe make me a stronger climber (no granny to bail me out), and to absolutely guarantee no more dropped chains.

Makes sense, although a standard derailleur might still need some help to hit that big cog.

Fred, there are two positions on the 1up 16 cog to match up with the ramps for SRAM or Shimano cassette.

If I had to do it over again (and I will when the existing cassette needs replacing)...

I've got a very similar setup on my Joker. A Wolftooth chainring, and my friend had a pretty cool-looking clear polycarb bashguard sitting around his shop forever, so he gave me that to slap on there too. It might keep the chain from falling off the outside, but it's never fallen off the inside, so I kinda think it is redundant, but I keep it on, because it looks cool....

An X9 Type 2 with a narrow-wide chainring really is pretty fail-safe, even with a long travel frame like the Joker.

That's a really cool development. I think I'll get me one when they become available.

SRAM mid-priced GX 1x11 sounds like good news:

OK boys and girls- Who's installed one of these as of yet? Nobody? Bueller?

It looks like the ticket for my fat arse but I noticed that you have to order it and the LBS's don't seem to carry them as of yet.

The Praxis cassette went with a 6 teeth jump 34-40, not sure why they would do that. Adding a 40 to an 11-36 could be a smoother and less violent transition to the 40 ring. A conversion I did that works flawlessly for a friend is the 28 X 11-36; built more for Calavera and la Costa.
