For those thinking of changing out your rear cassette with the new fad of 40t or 42t, a 40t with a 34 chain ring up front with a mid cage derailleur will work. Although very tight it does work. I would be hesitant to try out a 42t in the rear though. The B tensions screw provided by hope is maxed out in my setup.

How did you manage to fit a motorcycle tire on your bike? That thing looks huge!

Is that the Hope 40 tooth T-Rex Expander? Looks like a SRAM Mech? Is it a clutch mech? I'm in the process of doing this, just collecting all the parts I need. Thinking of going 42 Wolf Tooth with an SLX long cage mech. How do you like the Hope?

Haha yes I am going to have to put a 2.3 width on the wheel, the 2.5 is just barely rubbing a zip tie I have on the triangle. LBS had the tire in stock and I couldn't wait to ride. It'll just go to the front. The specialized purgatory tires are crap. This tire made such a difference.

Yes it is the hope 40 tooth. Its a sram x0 mid cage. Didn't want to put too much money into my conversion so I just used the der. I had. It isn't clutch but I will keep the chain guide on. Shifts easily to the 40tooth. Can't go wrong with hope products. What front ring are you going to use? I changed from a 32 to 34. I noticed with the 40t although easier to get up the hill, I haven't been inclined to use it too much even with a 34 front ring.

I want to go 30 tooth up front. Looking at the Hope or RaceFace , if can afford it maybe the Wolftooth 30.

I have a OneUp 42T using a short cage derailleur and it works fine.

how do you like that hammerschmidt? Can you get to the 42t when its in the taller ring? 42t would be fine with a 32 front on mine probably but the 34 its stretching my der too far with no more b tension adjustment without keeping the proper chain tension.

Mudd - Curious what your rear der looks like when you shift to your smallest cog - it's folded back pretty far already on your middle cog. It looks like it would almost fold completely back on itself.

Also how long have you had the C-guide and how do you like it? I just put one on my bike about a month ago, so far I've been happy with it. (running 1x9, 32t front, 12-36 rear with X9 med. cage)

I will take a pix and post it.
With my setup, you gotta be exact in your chain linkage.

Love the C-Guide. Keeps the chain "tamed".
Even tho I have a clutch derailleur, keeps it from smacking on the chainstay, and with the HS, keeps a constant angle. Remember to use 3 tie wraps instead of the 2 they recommend.

In the words of Jeff Steber....
"The Hammerschmidt is probably the most under-rated bike component ever."

B tension screw not an issue for me.
There's only one 22T chainring. When the planetary gears are engaged, it emulates a 36T ring.
Super climbing granny gear with the 22/42 combo!
