Replacing an octalink with a hollowtech BB. Need to get BB refaced.

Has anyone had it done and can recommend a bike shop? — Preferrably near Chula Vista.

Very unusual. You probably have 68mm BB shell (frame),and will install a 73mm BB; try placing the 2.5mm plastic spacers, one on each side, that may correct the irregularity but may affect the chain line slightly. Good luck.

It's a 73 mm frame. I measured it before buying the new BB.

The tool for threading and facing a BB is a Park Tool BTS-1 and it goes for around $480 at most online stores with a few asking more and a few asking less.

The tool for facing a BB is a Park Tool BFS-1 and goes for around $320 online. It looks like it's basically a BTS-1 without the taps.

I went to a bike store in Chula Vista yesterday, and judging from what they told me and what the tools costs, they probably don't have the tool.

Do you need to get it refaced because there is damage, or want to because it's recommended? If it looks okay, i wouldn't bother.

If you just need it chased and faced most good bike shops can do it. And most will do it on the spot, only takes 5-10min.

$20 to chase and face a BB at REI Otay Ranch. They did it while I waited, but sometimes you might have to leave your bike depending on how busy they are.

If anyone reads this because you want to have your BB chased and faced, first question to ask the bike shop is whether they have the tool. If they tell you something like "you don't need to worry about it," they probably don't have the tool. If they have the tool, they should be more than happy to charge you to chase and face.

The new cranks with the external bearing worked great. If you have a 73 mm shell, use one spacer on the drive side per the instructions. I didn't even need to adjust the derailleur. Both old and new cranks and BB's were Shimano.

There are lots of threads about whether to chase and face online. Some people say don't bother. Some people say if you're using external bearings, they can wear out quicker if the outside edges of your BB shell aren't parallel to each other.

You have to balance the cost of chasing and facing against the cost of your bearings. Just stating the obvious here.

i can say from 10+ bikes experience (and about 15+ years as well) that i never EVER had external bearings wear out and I never EVER had my BB chased/faced.
i have a feeling that your bearings will wear out from misuse (hitting rocks with your cranks) and improper maintenance (getting water in them when washing your bike) before they ever wear out from being unchased/unfaced.

but hey, whatever floats your boat...

You gotta actually peddle your bike in order to wear them out.
