Saw this shocking thing today. Bad news for this Giant Reign owner! I had never seen a frame break like that and suggested it was a good thing Giant had a lifetime frame warranty, but he said it was his fault. He is a very big & tall dude and had a brand new Specialized Dropper post, which he had not inserted the minimum depth. When looking at those min marks on a standard post, I'd always assumed the penalty was a bent or broken post. Never thought about the tremendous leverage exerted on the frame tube, especially by a beefy dropper post. Guy was taking it pretty well, all things considered. Apparently he was unhurt when it broke, and was able to ride back standing up.

damn that sucks... i have that same bike. hurts to see one like that.

That happened to my friend once, he didnt insert his seatpost enough on his gt i drive bike and the same result occurred.

Totally sucks. You're correct though about the markings on the post are there to protect the seatpost. Most frames have a small hole on the seat tube that needs to covered to protect the frame. Depending on the post you can raise it past the marks but never past the frame hole.
