No, not a Hurt Locker post, although that title would work for some of us. I offer a thread in counterpoint to the obsessive-compulsive upgraders amongst us who are replacing great new parts with slightly greater newer parts.

I did just do a few upgrades to my bike, but I saw no reason to replace these pedals -- yet. I found the spare pins that came with my pedals, and replaced the most worn ones. They did not include enough to replace them all, but that's okay. I'm good to go for a while longer.

Post up yer favorite beater components. I know they're out there (unlike a cassette I recently posted, this is for components in use on a regularly ridden bike).

While I understand not wanting to buy the latest and greatest, that pedal is ridiculous. There is no way I would ride that. Just imagine what would happen if that thing snapped going through a rock garden. Just my .02

dang I have some beat up pedals on my bike but nothing like that

I have two sets of these, one has never even been installed and still has reflectors on it. You can have one for the grand total of free if you want them, they are cheap but less likely to kill you than those I think lol

they are wellgo "v12 clones" from chain reaction btw

It's unlikely Dan's pedal is going to have a catastrophic failure but I think it's cool that two DT'ers care enough to call him on it and offer a free replacement.

Yes, I feel the same way. Thanks guys. That's actually an excellent cast magnesium pedal. The center and sides are intact. What broke it was a pedal strike on a rock, going downhill pedaling in 27th gear...which about one second later broke my wrist as well when I hit the ground about twenty feet down the trail... I am confident there will be no sudden failure unless I do something similar again. And I'm doing my best not to repeat that. I actually like to keep them as a reminder.

Dude.. Take the pedals!

definitely not gonna go catastrophic- what is gonna happen is that your gonna rake that thing down your shin, or catch it on something and its not gonna be pretty. Maybe even as simple as hooking the back of your leg when multi-dabbing up the trail.

good story about replacing those pins now, take the pedals.

my .02

Thanks. They've been that way two or three years, and none of the above has happened. I actually have some perfectly intact mag pedals on my old bike. But I'll pop for some trick new super-skinnies eventually. I like to spread out my upgrades so it's not so obvious to the starving children. And, as I said, it's a reminder to keep hubris in check.
