Fap fap fap!

sick bikes guys!

I wish! Some BS involved in why I don't have my TR450 anymore. Anyways, found a sick deal from NOTB on the podium(It is a new 2011 with a 2013 shock). They are both awesome bikes. I think the tr450 had a little better pedaling platform but that might just be because my podium I set up a little more raked. But who needs to pedal on a DH bike anyways! I have only gotten two rides on the podium so far but it rails!

I'm running 36 in front

That's the problem right there. Have to be in beast mode to climb a 36 front ring.

+1 Try running a 34 or 32 and it'll be much better. I'm running 1x10 on my NomadC with a 32t up front and 11-36. It's no granny but it doesn't completely suck even at La Costa and other climby spots.

+2 Get rid of the 36 and try a 32. On my 11-36 w/ a 32 there are times I want a granny, but not many times I need one..... (F.U. Elfin Way Up Trail!!!)

If you go smaller on your ring you can't go faster in the direction that counts. Just grow bigger muscles!!!

Beautiful bike man. Cant wait to check it out. Did it take you longer to set up the 10spd? I find it picky as hell. Also, tip of the day. New sram 10spd links are no longer toolless. I found that I could use the KMC links that are toolless. Remind me next time you stop by. Ill hook you up.

Exactly Stu! This is how I see it too. I was able to clear everything that I needed to, I was just having to put 90% effort to make it up the hills, where normally I could just drop to a lower ring and climb at 60%.
I got to the top of the hills faster, but my muscles were getting fatigued. I often use the 36 front with the 12 in the back, and any gear lower than that I'll be limited on my top speed. I just have to figure out a technique to conserve my muscle strength while climbing.

Here are my six bikes, (5 complete, and one that still needs to be built), the first three are being kept and the last three will be up for sale soon.

just curious: why do you tilt your roadies' saddles like that? doesn't it push your weight up front on your bars?

I really don't notice it, but maybe because my handle bars are lower than my seat?... I think it might have to do with climbing hills. Between my house and SDSU I have a few hills to climb and this angle makes it easier to be seated while climbing when my handle bars are lower than the seat.

Where are you riding that you spin out in your top gear? The only place I ever manage that is riding down big hills on the road.

It's not about spinning out, it's about having resistance during top speed to keep the bike in control.
I tested the bike this morning at high speeds and the 36 front with 12 rear is not high enough ratio. I couldn't reach top speed, and Motomonster85 kept on getting away from me on the high speeds downhill. He rode it also and said the same thing, not high enough gearing.
I think 36 front with 8 teeth ring in the back would be perfect.

So, this means I will not change the front to a 34 or 32.

You know the paved road that goes up Mt. Woodson, well, we climbed up from Poway Lake and rode down the paved road. He was on his DH bike and me on my nomad, and he was able to keep a higher top speed compared to me.

What is Adolfo using for his front chain ring? I think your test comparison lacks real world application. Tire choice could also slow you down depending on tread pattern or compound. If you aren't spinning out the gearing and can still add power, then that is not what is causing you to lose speed. I see what you are saying about wanting resistance in the gearing because that feels better when weighting into corners or pumping. At some point you are going to need to give some gearing for climbing... At 90% power is being used by your legs during a climb, what are going to have left if you hit a techy section half way up your climb or closer to the top; walk it even though you know you could probably clean it if you could possibly spin through it without using so much energy sapping torque? Riding a mtb and a road bike are completely different animals. On a road bike you can relax all the extra muscles that don't effect pedaling. On a mtb, you need those muscles to balance and react to terrain changes. Mtb is more full body, where road is more cardio.

I know you were f*cking with me.
I guess I have made my conclusion to stick with the gearing that I have currently until I find something that better fits my style of riding. 36 in front and 12-36 cassette.

A_Street: I understand what you are saying and that's my problem. I have to change my riding stile so the 90% effort becomes under 70% so I can still bomb down the hill after climbing.

Well your legs will get stronger, but it's going to be painful getting there. 32t is starting to feel even a bit to small for me since I've built the strength to push it pretty easily. 34t will be the next step, but I don't think I'd go for 36t ever. Some climbs would be too tough, or taking my bike on a trip with trails
I'm unfamiliar with may prove making that big of a ring an inconvenience.
