If you want to run full cable housing, you can always get these:  Jagwire carries cable grips too: http://jagwireusa.com/index.php/products/v/Cable_Grips   I've been using them on some of the bikes I build up for people that go from Mech brakes to Hydraulic. It should work fine for shifter cables too. |

i like to feel the cable tension when i am adjusting my rear dr. if you have full housing on that is a little difficult. |

My Marins, Haros, Treks, Ellsworth, Santa Cruz, and Specialized bikes were all full cable housings with no adjustment problems at all. Keeps the shifters running smoother, less debris in cable line. Less Corrosion too. If there is rust, good chance it's only at the ends and you can trim them off. |

Just looking at new bikes online and most have full housing for both ends |

I finally had time to change out the shifter cables and drill out the cable guides. It really was a easy thing to do and they work great. I'll be doing this to my other bikes soon. Went for a spin around PQ today and I can say the shifting is a good as new  I looked at the cable housing at the rear when getting ready to unload the bike and there was a little bit of mud right where the open cable would have been Next time your changing your cables out, you might think about drilling out the guides and running full housing |

Bumping this old thread. Cuz last time I put on a new cable I went with full housing but was lazy and not convinced so just ziptied it in place. That cable lasted waaay longer than any before. I just changed it a few days ago, which made me think — as it ALWAYS does — why didn’t I do this sooner, this damn thing shifts like butter now! And yes, I finally drilled out the guides, very easy, works and looks better. |

Lost a bit of the low & high end but it's just so simple to use. Changed out the cables and casing at the same time. When you grab the old cable and move it back & forth versus the new ones, it's so much smoother. It's such a gradual degrade you don't notice it until the swap out Probably looks so sweet next to that chrome frame
