So my grandfather in law dropped off a beat-ass Schwinn tandem he said is from the 60's. he thought I might be able to fix it since I'm into bikes. I told him finding parts is gonna be a nightmare and its gonna require more work than I have time for right now. Then he said to try and get an estimate somewhere and he'd pay for it. I just don't know where to start and figured I'd ask you guys for any advice. Most of the metal is good, just rusty. Looks like it needs a new derailleur, chain, shifters etc. thanks for your input!

If someone on here doesn't want to take on the project, try Alpha bikes in Vista. Good luck

I agree on Alpha Bikes in Vista, probably your best best for parts and advise.
Next would be Chuck at Pacific Bikes in Oceanside, he's a bit surley and a tad on the more expensive side, but his knowledge is superb.

Have fun with it, it sounds like a great project!

If you want a full restoration, Cyclart in Vista is great for that kind of stuff. But it will cost you. They do frame repair, paint, and will find the parts and rebuild. But like i said it will cost you.

^^ What RHS said. Post some pics. Does he want it restored, or just made rideable?

Thanks for the replies fellas. Guess I'll start with chuck. Where's Cyclart at? Nothings gonna cost me... he just wants me to check out some prices. I'd imagine he wants it rideable even though i cant exactly see him and his wife jumping on the thing and pedaling off into the sunset at their age! I'll try to post pics, probably tomorrow, but im warning ya..... its an eyesore! Might be worth a mint though if its as old as he says it is...

Good guys. If it is worth something they will know. Vintage Restoration is their thing for sure.

South Bay Bikes on 230 3rd Avenue in Chula Vista sells tandems. He has tandems on display in the shop and he also has some old restored Schwinn 10 speeds on display. He's not the kind of guy who turns his nose up at you if you're not going to spend big bucks. Last year when I needed some downtube shifters for an old bike, he found some in a parts box he had laying around and gave them to me.

South Bay Bikes could be a good choice for restoring a 60's vintage tandem.

I have an old tandem I was going to get running. I bought a mountain bike at a yard sale to swap parts then the gardener needed a bike so it just sits there. Next time I see some old mountain bike it might start over.
