Not a fan of Hellcat (I have the Greg Minnaars) at all. Never fitted me right. A bit on a narrow side too. Too soft of soles for my taste. It is now my dedicated trail work/HAB session ride type of shoes (i.e. a pair I don't give a flying eff effing up hiking up over rocks or packing dirt). Was going to try the Maltese but I ended up with an old Shimano MP66 DX.. Loving it. Just the right stiffness and gives me a much more positive engagement feel when I clip in. I might try the Shimano AM45 soon.

I don't know about the relative stiffness. IMO, they are both good-looking shoes, and I've found durability to be really good for FiveTens. But the single best point in their favor is the superior traction of the sticky rock-climbing rubber on flat pedals. Which is a moot point if you're going to clip-in with them, especially on Candys as opposed to Mallets. Although still valid if you expect to do a lot of HAB on rock (...but that seems unlikely in your vicinity). Many times I've strolled up a steep rock while friends slip'n'slide in Sidis etc. Anyhow, the Falcon copy says "stiff but sensitive" and Hellcat says "stiff, powerful", so I interpret that as meaning the Hellcat might be better for you. In rock-climbing shoes, as in condoms, sensitive equates to thinner. Maybe worth an email to Five Ten to inquire.

Why would a stiff sole be better than one that flexes, it seems that a stiffer sole would require more effort on the HAB up.

I take you don't ride clipless since you missed my point relative to stiff soles. :)

Forgot to mention , sole must be stiff so i don't get numb feet after 6 to 10 hours in the saddle.
