I know there's a crew that rides at night and I'm hoping to get your suggestions for a light setup. Coming off a big surgery, I can't afford to run into trees or clip a branch or rock. So I need something to really light up the trail far enough in front of me but also provide some ambient light close to the bike.

I currently have a MiNewt Mini 150 for my helmet and would like a handlebar mounted light. I've heard good things about Magicshine but don't know how well they hold up over time.

Appreciate your suggestions.

That Minewt 150 is going to get washed out by whatever you place on the bars when going straight but should be fine when turning your head around corners.

Get something floody for the bars - what's your price range? That helps make recommendations.

Anyway, the NR Pro 1500 is nice and bright, floody and still throws plenty of light down the trail. It's like a Trinewt on steroids.
The Cygolite Centauri (what I use) is good on the bars.
Magicshine is fine too, just get one with a good battery.
There's also Dinotte - check out their website for options.
There's also Baja Designs - nice, rugged, well built lights with a great warranty.

I do night rides regularly during the week with a few guys here and between us we have and use the magicshines, niteriders and baja design lights. I personally run a NR 1500 on my bars and a Baja Designs Stryker pro(700) on my helmet. I too had a major surgery(neck) a while ago and would rather see as much as possible than have surprises pop out of no where. It also helps that I try to follow SocalNomadRider who rocks a BD Dual Stryker (1800) and a Stryker SL (900) set up so it's like riding behind a car with the high beams on  If you have the budget Baja Designs are great lights with a great warranty, and you can dive around 30ft deep with them

Magicshines are excellent and cheap. I'll never pay big bucks for a light again.

+3 definitely not 1200 lumens, but they're bright enough. And at $45 a pop, I don't feel bad if I clip it on a low branch.

+4. I have this red-cased light also on my helmet (I consider it a Magicshine as well). Great combo with the MS on the bars. I think the whole package ran me about $130. Can't beat the value.

Damn you all go heavy duty. I just roll with a NR mini600, with a off-brand backup lowly 250.
Though I probable go a lot slower than all you dirt devils.
Maybe I'll grab one of these P7 lights too.

lots of articles on mtbr detailing how the magic's are made like crap. nonetheless, unless you're just running 1 light, that won't be an issue. also have the (older) baja. brightness somewhat comparable. the reflector on the baja widens the beam, but you can buy a lens for the magic's to to the same thing (highly recommended for $5). build quality between the magic and baja is almost laughable, but the magic is also about 1/5 the price of the baja. baja is a local company.

if price is no object, check out the mtbr light shootout. usually fairly up to date.

if price is a concern, get the magic. get many. pimp your ride.

ps- welcome back, ride safe

I have franken-light set; 1 magicshine lighthead with a random old battery pack I had around, 1 P7 flashlight, 1 cree XM-L flashlight. The xml flashlight is brighter than the magicshine, the P7 light is probably 100 lumens less than the MS.

The MS goes on the bars, the 2 flashlights go on the helmet. Really like having no wires on the head mounted lights, and they aren't too heavy - like a mini mag light. Don't think I've ever run with all 3 on high - even if each one is only really 700 lumens or so that's a ton of light.

P7 Torch

The torches will go a bit under 1.5 hours on one good 18650 on high, but are easy to swap out for fresh batteries on the trail if you need too.

These are the cheap mounts for attaching to helmet:

If you want to put torch on the bars there's this one:

I ended up going with the MS 808E with a wide angle lens, excellent price and free shipping:
http://www.amazon.com/MagicShine-MJ-808 ... 275&sr=1-1

This Cree looks interesting too for 1/2 the price:

 Thanks again everybody for all the input.
