Does anyone know whether they work on forward-facing horizontal dropouts? At $25 plus shipping, I hate to buy one just to find out.

Here's a link to the product information on amazon dot com.

It's for a mid nineties fully rigid mountain bike that's been converted to a fixed/single-speed with a flip-flop hub.

I have no idea personally but this is interesting because I've thought of converting my '88 Stumpjumper to SS.

Check this thread on MTBR. One of the posters (nuck_chorris in post #13) claims to have done it with a little metal filing.

A few other posts recommend the Homebrewed Components tugger.

I'm still not completely done with the project, but once I am, I'll post a few pics and info that could be useful to anyone thinking about doing the same kind of conversion... mostly info about wheel components.

Have you tried to find a "magic gear" combo? That's what I run on my budget SS and it's worked out well for me -- don't have to mess with a tensioner, tug nuts or an EBB.

The tensioner is just to align the wheel easier when I put it on. I haven't had a problem with the axle slipping in the dropouts even with the old wheel which had a quick release on it. I just tightened it down as tight as I could get it.

Short answer: I'm experimenting with gear ratios.

Mostly my son is using it as a transportation bike to go to school and wherever. The original chainrings were bent, worn out, and unusable so I put a relatively cheap crankset with a 38 tooth removable chainring on it. I put an 18 tooth BMX freewheel on it since a 38/18 or thereabouts seems to be a pretty popular combination from some of the threads I've read. Well, my son doesn't like it. He says it's too low.

On the fixed gear side, I've got a 16 tooth cog and a 14 tooth cog, but my 3/32 chain doesn't fit on them. Live and learn.

So I now have on order:
-> a 1/8 chain
-> a 46 tooth chainring
-> a 16 tooth BMX freewheel

We'll see how that works out.
