Hello everyone..I just moved to San Diego from Philadelphia and am looking forward to riding (MTB and Road) in CA. I am used to rocky, root infested, dense foliage and shade covered trails in the east coast so am going to have to get used to the trails here in the San Diego area. Would love to hook up with folks who can show me the trails around here. Also looking to purchase a full suspension bike so any tips on local bike shops are welcome. I am in the Carmel Valley area.

Welcome to our dust bowl! North of the Border bike shop in Sorrento Valley, just south/adjacent to you in Carmel Valley. I live just east of you and ride dirt and road. Let me know when you get a bike.

Pq will most likely be your usual riding area. I can show you around some time as that will be a bit better than trying to figure it out yourself. Send me a pm any time you want to work something out.

Thanks a lot guys.. I did ride this past weekend on some trails behind Ocean Air elementary. Just wanted to get out and get the dust off (of on) my bike..The first thing I had to change and pay attention to was my braking habit. Took me a while to get to the right amount of braking necessary to slow down on dusty trails/tracks...There were quite a few steep inclines that I would have normally gone over but decided to play it safe and walk down..Extremely different than what I am used to..

that main trail down there going south will take you to LPQ. there's a fun singletrack trail that drops you in if you veer to the right from the fireroad beyond Von's.

A full suspension that can be used for the range of trails here. Would prefer a slightly heavier but compact frame that offers better control. My current bike is 26lbs and I find the steering to be extremely light and twitchy and the rear bounces quite a bit over rough terrain. It climbs well but the trip downhill is usually restrained...

I know the 'North of the Border' shop mechanics have a very good reputation. If you're looking to buy a new bike, 'Bike Bling' in Escondido has by far the best selection of any shop in the county and maybe all of SoCal.

Do you know about the website http://www.meetup.com ? There are several San Diego/SoCal related mountain biking groups on there. If you sign up, you will get emails of all the group rides they have planned. I think I'm signed up with (3) of the groups and between them, they must average 6-7 rides per week. Penasquitos is a weekly occurrence with rides of various levels.
