To embed youtube vids, do not use the embed feature on youtube. Instead, use the "youtube" tags.
In the URL address bar, the address has an "=" in it, you copy everything after the "=" and paste it in between the youtube tag's.

And to clarify, since some of us are not so smart as others: (it took me ages to get this down!)

When writing your post click on the "Youtube" button. This will appear: [youtube]['/youtube]

Copy the web address for your Youtube vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxD0PqVlt5Q&feature=player_embedded

The part you want to copy is in bold

Copy and past this part in between the tags:

[youtube]hxD0PqVlt5Q['/youtube]

When you submit your post the video will appear

Okay, so I've followed the instructions on several occasions, with only about a 30% success rate. I've even had one of two embed in a post, and the other hang up. So I just give up and put in the link. What happens when it fails is that after clicking either "submit" or "preview" a green progress bar starts at the bottom, and then takes forever before just hanging. Is my computer just too darn slow?

Post in the text that you were trying to post so we can try to see what the problem is.

Maybe a different browser would help with that Dan. Google Chrome allows more text than IE and is supposed to be faster, although, its just a tad slower for me so I dont use it unless I plan on a long-winded rant.
I think a bunch of these guys are running firefox or mozilla, you guys have any issues?
Another thing you can do is delete your "Board Cookies", that button is just below the main forum on the left.

Okay, so here's the most recent attempt's URL:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLRLMfz7b98

so I just tried to embed the part after the = sign

edit: well it worked! Musta been the cookies thang, which I deleted just before trying this. Thanks Evan, thanks Pete!

edit #2: so after deleting the cookies, I went back to the original post where it failed, and it worked fine now. Thanks again.

Hey D00der, a dozen years later, I’m having trouble again. I know everyone must be missing my arcane musical posts…. Anyhow, back in August, youtube.com started doing the youtu.be thing, and I’ve been having trouble embedding. I know you can go in and copy the youtube.com link, but most of the time I still can’t embed it. I’ve cleared cookies from DT, cleared my browser cache etc. I can embed my own youtube vids, or if I’ve first clipped a video, but most of the time I get a blank embed. Got any helpful hints? I guess I could just post the link, but…

Yeah, that’s why I don’t understand what’s wrong. Perhaps a nefarious scheme to get me to subscribe to a premium version. Thanks for taking a look Brian.

Thanks! I thought it was the chunk after the last = sign. Could’ve sworn that’s how I’d been doing it, but I’ve forgotten easier things.
