Not a lecture, but a little practical advice -- if you spook a horse and it kicks you, you could die or incur substantial medical bills. If you hit a hiker, the hiker could die or incur substantial medical bills. None of those scenarios are very good for you. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Think what you want, but those scenarios are not all that unlikely. I'm sure you've seen hikers and horsers do remarkably stupid stuff. I personally know three people who have been kicked by horses -- 1 died, and the other 2 were badly injured. To me, the risk of not yielding the trail, especially to horsers, outweighs the reward of not yielding the trail.

All this angst over yielding... Okay, I'll admit that I won't dismount either a bike or horse for the purpose of yielding trail to anyone, and that I don't expect the damn-bastard bikers in Cheseboro/Ahmanson Ranch (about the only place I ride a horse anymore) to dismount, since I sure as hell wouldn't. Nor do I believe that "others yield to me" mean that others must leap off the trail or stay behind me no matter how long I choose to keep them there. I do recognize that there's an established yielding hierarchy and the reasons for it, however.

However, to the tense and aggressive young Ratig...er, His Highness, I have one thing: CLICK THIS to calm yourself down. Everything's gonna be okay.

OK, my reply is OT and this whole thread is in the wrong forum, but that was an interesting link Erik -- and as the internet usually does for me, it led to this article in the same magazine:

http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/silveira121.html

I am not a "pry my cold dead fingers..." guy, but on some topics I think the left and the right have more in common with each other than the mass of sheep in the middle.

RHS, great topic! Like Scott, I had never seen this thread before. A little reminder is always good and it makes me stop and think about the other folks I share this passion with. Automatically, I smile...we are a pretty damn fine community of outdoor enthusiasts.

Outside of our family, some user groups see a different picture. From the onset, we are unique. Where the average human dares to set foot on less than safe terrain, we thrive on riding it! By accepting the risk inherent to MTB, other non bike users look on and likely wish they had the spine to achieve what we get from the sport. It's not that we are better...we are simply supreme prime moving humans seeking a different high.

The greater part of our community is comprised of men and women who are quite conscious about our duties to ensure a positive image for our culture. MTB is truly a state of mind...we are passionate about our niche and the wiser of our community know that there are others who look at us and simply do not have a clue about who we are and what we are made of.

By constantly putting our best pedal forward, we show other users (non MTB) that we are there to enjoy the same areas on a more exciting level without imposing harm on other users or the habitat. To show proof, we police our garbage, educate our newer participants, and help maintain the very trails we use. To a very measurable extent, we sell our position to stay on the trail and do our best to have a future to enjoy them. Additionally, we do a damn good job of this and have some really incredible people that head up the advocacy programs within our local areas...much thanks btw!

All in all, I think this forum is head and shoulders above others. It's just my opinion but I see a more refined group of passionate riders in here. We truly care about our sport and those that we share it with. Sorry for the long winded post but I really get fired up about doing the right thing for the right reasons...makes me proud to ride a bike and to share our trails with some extraordinary like minded people.
