I wish I was able to understand this nerd speak. I logged on fine yesterday and am on today at work, but I just checked my phone and it won't load - says there's an error. I'm on Sprint.

someone who is timing out without a proxy give me the ip you're resolving to so we can confirm it's not a dns issue.
...

Both home/work resolve the IP to 67.18.16.114.

A tracert from home (I'm on RR) gets there fine in 13 hops.

A traceroute from a Linux box at work (behind a NAT router) times out after 30 hops. It gets to Dallas, but loses it before the final hop to the hostgator box. The last host in Dallas is te1-2.car05.dllstx6.theplanet.com (70.87.254.174).

what options do you put on traceroute to get back useful info? I'd thought most firewalls ignore traceroute.

We didn't have this problem before the 500th member joined...I guess its time to start banning people so the regular folks can have access?! J/K

But in all seriousness, I have recieved some texts and phone call inquiries as to whats happening with members not able to get on. I don't know geek speak so if ya'll dont mind can ya dumb it down to gorilla grunts for me so I can kinda comprehend why so many of our members cant access our kick-ass site?
Is it ISP related? Is ISP even a used term anymore?
I have broadband through cox and haven't had any issues yet, but from all the texts and calls I'm getting sounds like lots-0-folks are.

Yeah, I still cannot get to the site without going through as proxy. I hope someone figures it out, cause this blows.
I wish I better understood computereese, cause I would damn sure be trying to fix this shit.

I don't give it any options.
On Windoze (in a cmd window): tracert dirttreaders.com
On Linux: traceroute dirttreaders.com

Yes, some firewalls will block ICMP traffic (used by ping, traceroute, etc.). If you're behind one that does, you're SOL. Otherwise, routers and hosts use ICMP regularly.

This seems like a routing issue, not DNS. If anyone who can't get on wants to check something, try this (if you're on Windoze, that is):
  • click Start -> Run
  • type "cmd" in the Run dialog, then click OK or hit Enter
  • you'll get a black window (the good 'ole "DOS prompt")
  • type "nslookup dirttreaders.com" at the prompt
  • if you get a response that includes something like this then it's not a DNS problem:
    Code:
    Server:  ns1.lax.pnap.net
    Address:  216.52.254.1

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name:    dirttreaders.com
    Address:  67.18.16.114
  • if you get something like this, then you've got a DNS issue:
    Code:
    Server:  ns1.lax.pnap.net
    Address:  216.52.254.1

    *** ns1.lax.pnap.net can't find dirttreaders.com: Non-existent domain

I'm not a net/it guy so someone might explain it better but I will try:
To get from your internet provider to dirt treaders traffic hops to several different locations, for example my path from home ( hiding first 2 ips ):
TraceRoute to 67.18.16.114 [www.dirttreaders.com]

Hop (ms) (ms) (ms) IP Address Host name
1 8 14 12 72. -
2 15 9 10 206. -
3 19 18 7 216.52.189.9 border4.te4-4.colo4dallas-5.ext1.dal.pnap.net
4 16 16 12 216.52.191.34 core3.tge5-1-bbnet1.ext1.dal.pnap.net
5 18 17 12 66.79.145.97 core3.ext1.dal.inappnet-xx.cr1.dal005.internap.net
6 9 11 10 66.79.147.186 cr2-cr1.dal005.internap.net
7 Timed out Timed out Timed out -
8 11 14 15 70.87.253.26 te7-2.dsr02.dllstx3.theplanet.com
9 11 8 12 70.87.253.126 te3-3.dsr02.dllstx2.theplanet.com
10 12 11 10 70.87.254.174 te1-2.car05.dllstx6.theplanet.com
11 21 19 13 67.18.16.114 gator470.hostgator.com
Trace complete

One of the hops close to hostgator in Houston ( dirttreaders location ) is down so some people will get to and some not get to dirttreaders because the hop path depends on the starting point ( net provider ).

Hope that helps.

When you tell your web browser to load DT, it sends a request to DT's server that says "omg hai, plz send me yur webz." The request doesn't travel directly from your computer to the DT server, it bounces off (it is "routed") lots of intermediary computers and/or equipment to get there. The internet is made up of millions of small networks (city streets), but there are major "backbones" (freeways) that just about all traffic eventually will touch.

To get from your house to DT, your computer sends the request to your ISP, who routes it through their city streets to one of the major freeways (ISPs usually access multiple freeways). The request eventually gets off at an offramp and continues on city streets to the destination. What might be happening here, is that some people are connected to a group of city streets and freeways that has a clear path to DT. Others of us (myself included) are hitting some sort of traffic jam somewhere in-between and the data is never arriving. This is actually quite rare because most major freeways know alternate routes, so being re-routed isn't uncommon when a bridge collapses into the river. There have been a few cases where someone (I'll call said person an idiot for better or worse), accidentally screws up the design of their freeway or city street and makes it a roundabout where data that enters can never escape. The black hole of networking. That might not be occurring here, but it is a possibility. Those problems are usually detected very quickly because it usually affects a large number of things. This has been going on for a few days now...

thanks.
I was thinking our firewall might be the issue with traceroute but someone else at work didn't think it would. I tried every logical option and only got ***. I can't get on our firewall, so can't help much.

Absolutely the best, simple-est, explanation I have ever read on how it all works. THANKS!
