I'm still looking for a more integrated approach, but this was loaded by default from the hosting company:

You have to sign up again to get in. Reminds me a bit of IRC.

We used to run the php chat on a forum i moderated in the past, but it seemed more buggy than the integrated shoutbox so we switched to that. W did keep an irc channel open too though :D

i found this list of 20 shoutbox scripts for php
